Anime on 4K is still a rarity and the only cel based anime I can think of released is Space Adventure Cobra and Tomorrow's Joe 2. 4K discs are pricey to press and I highly doubt that small anime distributors can afford to press 4K discs.

Just be glad it sees the light of day on Blu-ray after all.

Not at all, it's one of many titles that got me into anime in the mid-nineties, but f*** me, it's not exactly a happy tale.

Does the original uncut footage even still exist?

I'm not counting on an actual completely uncut version but it would be nice if they somehow got a hold of some of the lost footage and present it as extras. Like the stuff seen in the Japanese trailers that was on the most recent US DVD.

Damn, I'm so hyped for this! Still can't believe it lol.

So, is this a perfect disc? No. We worked with what we had. 95% of the film looks great tho. Also did an HD remaster of the Streamline trailer.

Also, seeing the film for the first time in 16x9, it really is clearly made to be seen in that format. The framing is so much more cinematic.

I see the True Savior series has been released on Blu in Germany. Unfortunately no English subtitles.
There are also Dutch+French subtitled BDs of the two Raoh movies and the Kenshiro movie. I hope Discotek will release those too in the future. Rather give my money to them than Kazé.

I thought these were only with French subtitles, the Kaze ones?

Also I was under the impression 1.33:1 is the OAR for the FOTNS movie?

Cost and lack of UHD-BD replication is an issue. It costs too much to restore/remaster anime at 4K, so upscales are the norm. There are also only a few UHD-BD replicator lines on the planet, but a Japanese company is at the forefront of UHD-BD replication and has the highest capacity for replicating discs, so the in-country market has access to it, even though they don't really want it or will use it. DVD is still dominant in the Asian home video market - including Japan - while streaming is the preferred consumption/delivery method.

I know that with the DVD release, there is a night and day difference in video quality between the edited movie, and when they add back in, the original extra violence stuff.
Like DVD to VHS.
Does anyone know if that has been corrected for this release, or is it going to be the same for the bluray?

Several websites and webshops mention Dutch subtitles, which I assume is true because Kazé released them on DVD in the Netherlands. Of course there's a chance there are no Dutch subtitles on the BD, but that's very unlikely.

Could you post some links to which webshops you are referring to? I might be interested.

Amazon.fr and Anime-store.fr. That last store has them in a multi buy deal:

1 movie or OVA = 9.95€
5 movies or OVA = 29.95€
10 movies or OVA = 49.90€

EDIT: only the second Raoh movie and Kenshiro movie are in the multi buy deal. Anime-store.fr sell the first one only in a three movie BD boxset or three movie BD+2 OVA DVD boxset.

Found back cover scans on reference-gaming.com. The second Raoh movie and the Kenshiro movie mention Dutch subtitles, but first Raoh movie mentions only French subtitles.

^^^ Thanks!

Seems like it's better to wait for a complete Blu-ray set with all movies and OVAs in 1080p and at least with English subtitles. I think Italy also had the Blu-ray/DVD combo set. Damn shame the German set does not have English or Dutch subtitles otherwise I would have bought it in a heartbeat!

Doesn't look like it. Someone posted on imdb that Japanese parents and movie reviewers said it was too gory, so the studio that made it edited the original cut and then lost all the footage in a fire.

What's interesting is that Discotek was denied including the Italian trailer as a supplement in 2009 by the original studio. I wonder if they're embarrassed by the film, or something?

If memory serves, some of the original trailers had some of the uncensored scenes in them, and every release I've seen has them in the weird color filter.

I've been working my way through the original series and loving it. I look forward to seeing this movie.

Hopefully they'll also put out 'New Fist of the North Star' because I would like to watch that too.

Pre-ordered mine a couple of days ago from importcds.com (fair prices there!). Since I am living in germany it will take a couple of days/weeks.
Does anybody know of any reliable review of this blu-ray title out there? I could not find any.
