Yes, there are some DVDs that look better than LaserDiscs (Anchor Bay's Bad Taste DVD still holds up remarkably well even in the Blu-Ray era, though I imagine a fresh 4K remaster from the negatives would look out of this world) but LaserDisc is a wonderfully unappreciated video format.

DVD was always...well...kinda a shit format. Thank fudge for Blu-Ray and 4K UHD.
As mentioned, DVD is the superior format. A few bad releases doesn’t mean that LaserDisc is superior. It is inherently inferior in more than one way.

Well, currently DVD is superior. For a lot of the earlier US DVD releases and I mean the years after the format was introduced, there are quite a lot of japanese LD's that look better. There were a lot of crappy DVD releases in the U.S. and europe with VHS and LD transfers, often made worse with bad NTSC -> PAL conversions. And there still are quite a lot of titles that never got a rerelease, although discotek is working hard to correct that.

It also depends on whether a digital master exists. Working off analog video sources LD has a much easier time reproducing a noisy NTSC signal. The original Robotech LDs compared to the original DVDs for example. The Animeigo Macross DVDs looked better still, but that was because they were able to digitally re-telecine the film prints Harmony Gold was holding.

While I do wish this looked better, I will say it's the best its looked. Going to put up my Manga DVD on Ebay soon as this is easily a notch above that release.

Received my copy yesterday and immediately watched the first two episodes. Thought it looked quite good (except in dark parts of the picture/and some dark scenes), way better than my old bootleg DVD anyway.

Much has been said already in the past about the plot. There's a disclaimer from Discotek first when you boot up the disc. Also you can select censored or uncensored subtitles. Then there is additional info (written text) in the extras. It deals with the controversy surrounding Angel Cop's main plot and how anti-Semitism used to occur in Japan. This is a highly informative historical read, I was never aware of this. It certainly explains to me how something like Angel Cop could have been made in Japan back then...

I think Discotek handled this delicate matter in a very respectful way. Props to them for that (and a nice looking disc ofcourse!).

This took a while to arrive, but I finally got my copy and watched it in two sittings.

If this OVA isn't entertainment, then I'm a banana!

'Angel Cop' is an odd beast. There's really no reason it's as long as it. It could've easily been standard feature length without sacrificing anything. Yet, I was almost never bored. It's hard to believe something that, objectively, is quite bad managed to entertain me for 3 hours.

I had heard about the dub and its comically excessive cussing, but then the accurately translated subtitles promised offense of a more offensive variety. So for my first viewing, I ended up toggling between the English and Japanese audio tracks while leaving the accurate subtitles on. I laughed at the English cussing but was sincerely shocked at the hate speech in the accurate subtitles. I think I was expecting to find people's offense overblown, but no, the content is really shocking.

I was surprised at how there wasn't really any sexy stuff. I figured since the image on the cover features the hero busting out of a skin-tight catsuit that's unzipped below her navel, that there would be a whole lot of fan service moments of her taking showers and the such throughout the OVA, but not really.

I think future viewings of this will all be done with the English audio dub. It's just too funny. I am glad that Discotek had the good sense to present this tasteless material with the right framing. The text on the disc explaining the prejudices of Japanese people at the time was very informative.

I'm glad I saw this.

So I noticed Discotek also released Angel Cop on DVD
Curiously, is the transfer identical to the Japanese DVD or is it also the new phillarboxed 16 by 9 transfer like the Blu-Ray

Same source as the Blu-ray, which is superior to the Japanese DVD.

Anime with anti-semitic remarks, oh man, I now want to get it even more! Sometimes throughout the world history a country here and there gets it right, if for a moment...
Also, I wish more anime dubs were as honest and straight forward, so to say, as this one.

Is this even available for purchase anymore? Amazon only lists third party sellers (DEVILMAN 1990's OVAs aren't even available), Best Buy is sold out and it's not even being sold on eBay.

Just watched my copy after having the old Manga DVD for years. Decided to watch the original Japanese with the uncensored titles. It was still a fun ride in spite of the controversial aspects of it. However, I'm probably going with the English dub on future viewings as I absolutely love how over the top (mostly in regard to profanity) it gets. I always felt it added to the overall charm of the whole thing, lol.

These type of anime are meant to be enjoyable for what they are. I feel like most anime fans these days are too critical about these titles.

*and Night on the Galactic Railroad (I found this out by accident when I watched it in full and went to put another Region A disc in afterwards and realised my player was set to B the whole time, haven't tested it in a Region C so maybe it's not completely unlocked)
