What are your 5 favorite home media releases you've ever owned. I'm talking physical media that not only nailed it in regards to picture and sound, but went a step above in everything else to really make you feel like you were owning the definitive way to see given film..... or were just really cool to look at for that matter.
Evil Dead II: Book of the Dead Edition DVD Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition DVD Godzilla Toho Collection: Criterion set Aliens: Special Edition DVD Cowboy Bebop: Amazon set Honorable mentions: Saw: Special Edition DVD (with "fake blood" packet inside the cover) Casablanca: Ultimate Edition DVD Ghost in the Shell: Japanese premium laserdisc set [Show spoiler]

I don't care for physical nick nacks and packaging, so my picks are about the films and special features alone.
Lord of the Rings Extended Edition - This set has the most impressive amount and quality of special features in any home edition I can think of. It's the high water mark for exhaustive extras going all the way back to the DVD edition. It also has some of the best director cut content in films. [Show spoiler] The Ultimate Matrix Collection - Has almost as many special features as the Lord of the Rings, collects all three films and the Animatrix, and has multiple commentary tracks from both critics and philosophers. [Show spoiler] Blade Runner 5 disc special edition - An amazing collection of alternate cuts of the film, even including the Workprint version. It also has an impressive amount of special features. [Show spoiler] Transformers the Movie 20th Anniversary DVD edition - Has a lot of special features, including a rarely seen before then episode of the series originally shown in Japan. It also has commentary tracks from both the film makers and fans, showing what the film means to those it resonated with. [Show spoiler] Bruce Lee His Greatest hits - All of Bruce's movies, and even a sequel to Game of Death that doesn't even have Bruce in it. Multiple documentaries, tons of special features and the full uncut original fight footage from Game of Death rescanned and restored (that's the last film footage Bruce ever shot). [Show spoiler] I have to add a sixth: Star Trek the Next Generation Complete Series - Went back to the original negatives of the raw effects shots and rescanned and then reintegrated those shots into a new high def transfer. That was a massive amount of work, and it's pretty much unheard of that type of work is done for an entire 100+ episode series. It also has a ton of special features. [Show spoiler] Edit: this should probably be moved to the Blu-ray movies forum Last edited by roger semerad; 01-17-2021 at 10:46 PM. |

John Wayne (U.K. Release)
![]() Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Z (U.S. Release) ![]() Dragon Ball: Collection Part (Australian Release) ![]() Inspector Gadget: The Complete Series (Spanish Release) ![]() (Not a great edition, but the packaging and art cards were really cool) Dragon Ball Z: Rock the Dragon (U.S. Release) ![]() (Great booklet and discs, the disc slots were terrible though so I just used standard DVD cases to store them in) |

Lord of the Rings Trilogy--Extended Edition
These movies had just come out when I started collecting DVDs, and once I heard these extended cuts were in the works I held out for them. I was floored by the sheer amount of extras and added footage, and the quality is still top-notch. Even though the Blu-Ray version has a nice, thick gold box that looks great, I still give the edge to the DVDs for their book-like spines and quality box art. ![]() Blade Runner Ultimate Edition I waited years for a decent edition, then this came along. All the cuts, together in one nice package--in a briefcase nonetheless, with a folder of quality artwork and swag. It was far more than I expected, and it still brings me joy. ![]() Planet of the Apes Ultimate Collection Having the five original movies, the 2001 remake, the TV show, and the cartoon all bundled together gives me immense satisfaction, and the discs even come with a good heaping of bonuses. The bust is a little flamboyant, but it still sits on my shelf like a nerdy effigy, and I've become quite used to addressing it as Caesar. ![]() Dawn of the Dead UHD Thank goodness this showed up to me recently, intact, after being missent to Thailand. This thing is a beast with its sheer number of discs (three cuts of the movie, extras, and three CDs of music, holy crap). Plus books. I think this one has the most number of discs for a single movie I own, but it's also a dang good box. ![]() Columbia Classics Volume 1 UHD Collection A decent selection of films in decent quality, but I'm most floored by the box, the way it unfolds, and the way it houses the individual movies. ![]() There are a bunch more I could list, it's hard to settle on just five.
