Default Perfect Blue (Blu-Ray)

Just wondering why there isn't a blu-ray of this in the U.S. yet? The director has a pretty big fan base and just wondering why this hasn't been released yet?

There's a lot of classics that haven't hit blu-ray yet that many people are waiting for.

It's one of those lost Manga Entertainment titles, so that's why it hasn't been released. It's kinda unclear who has the US license at this point, since nothing is known of the terms and as Manga Entertainment US technically no longer exists, it may be up for grabs.

If you’re up for importing, get the UK disc. PQ isn’t the best, but it’s a huge upgrade over the DVD.

I seem to remember someone on Twitter hinting that one company recently bought rights just didn't announce it yet.

Someone asked Gkids to release it on twitter and they said it wasn't available to license.

My guess is that Discotek Media probably pick it up. It seems right up their alley.

It's Region B locked though right?

Yes. But, everyone should get a Region Free player, so it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Would be a great film for Criterion to release in the US.

It would be their first anime, right? That would be cool.

Technically, it would be their second. They released Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo) way back when on Laserdisc before they lost the rights.

I'd be there day one for good releases of Satoshi Kon's works. All of them! I only have Paprika on blu-ray and I'd double-dip for sure if they would rerelease it with a new, non-window-boxed transfer.
But yeah, a Criterion box set with Kon's entire filmography would be to die for!

I used to have that. It cost $125 and they misspelled “manga” as “magna” throughout the special features. Those were dark times. Still, they included the entire first issue of the “magna” on the disc, which was pretty cool.

It does seem like a no-brainer for Criterion to grab some of the more important classic anime. Anime has always carried a heftier price tag, so it seems safe that fans would shell out that extra cash for full-priced criterions.

Wasn't it the case that Darren Aronofsky bought the rights in order to use the tub scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream, and this is what's preventing anyone else from using the movie's rights?

If there's a single anime filmmaker that is worthy of a Criterion box set, is Satoshi Kon.

^This. I wish Criterion would distribute all of Satoshi Kon's work. So far all we have is Paprika from Sony, Perfect Blue from AL and Tokyo Godfathers from Umbrella. The Tokyo Godfathers release is pretty terrible IMO. How is windowboxing the frame still acceptable in 2018?

Also, I NEED MILLENNIUM ACTRESS! I'd import, but no subs.

Including this, there's a good amount of anime that desperately need bluray releases. I wonder how/if those guys that do Kickstarter releases could get a hold of the rights to do something proper...

Last time I checked, you didn't need to buy the rights to something just so you could make an homage to it in your own work.
