I remember one of the Pixar team speaking about this and the sheer computational effort to upscale their films to 4K was huge. It wasn’t the same as you or I simply running a file through some AI upscaling software. You’re not going to see a massive number of movies in 3D 4K even if it is done.

On top of that, I’d wager that Avatar 2 would weigh in at 80+ GB in 3D. Streaming that would be impossible for the average connection. (Mine only just manages HD, plus I have a limit of 500 GB per month.)

Finally, the price. It’s a proof of concept device and they know that not many will be buying it. Media companies won’t be jumping on board with exclusive content for very long, making it a rather expensive and shiny doorstop.

On the other hand, Quest 3 is strongly rumoured to be HD for both eyes. If this is the case, then the software is already in place and we can be enjoying our entire 3D movie collection straight out of the box in the same resolution as the disc they came on. And it’s “only” 500 quid.

Overall it is nice to see that Quest are reacting to Apple and Sony. It’s good for us consumers to have competition in the market and even better to see 3D film still supported and pushed as a main feature.

My guess is there will be no '3d versions of any film'. The 3d effect will be done by the hardware that will be able convert 2d films to "3d". And again, this is a new technology and I would expect the 3d to be different compared to what we have now either with legacy players or theater.

I can't see why you would think that.

What I think is this thing has Apple's first 3D camera and they are will support true 3D video from home made and other sources.

Not that I’m ever likely to own this headset, but auto conversion only would be horrible, no matter how smart the technology. Can’t imagine watching my favourite film and the 3D is different to how it should be.

If this hardware can convert 2D movies to 3D in real time, then studios sure are stupid for paying professional companies millions for 3D conversions. /s

It'll be a very long time before auto 3D conversions can come anywhere close to professionally made ones.

VR/MR headsets are 3D by nature. Feed it a 3D source and it will produce the goods.

Auto conversions would be just as awful as they are now on remaining 3DTV sets.

The below WWDC session video has a good introduction to how 3D video will work on the Vision Pro. It will support the MV-HEVC codec (Multiview High Efficiency Video Coding).

Disney have said Avatar 2 will be available on day one. So will other 3D movies be available on Disney Plus? Most notably the Phase 3 MCU that are reference quality 3D. I have a large 3D collection and it those MCU movies are the top of the pile. Also, if these 3D movies appear on Disney Plus will they be Vision Pro locked?

Is there any chance this will allow us to import and play our own files?

I've never really been an Apple device owner, do they allow you to import your own ripped blurays into iTunes or their tv box?

I uploaded some 3D movies to the cloud and then I used an app called 'Infuse' (it's like Plex) to stream via Apple 4k TV. I then used the settings on my 3D TV (OLED 2016) to display the right and left images as one 3D image. The whole process was flawless.

The stumbling block would be Vision Pro. I'm pretty sure it would just display the left and right images of the 3D and wouldn't know that it has to merge the images together as one image.

Day one of whenever the unannounced release day for the Vision One Pro is.

Wonder if they will go through with it.

Also wonder how long before the 2nd gen is available and it's better for half the price.

You could write Bob Iger a polite letter asking these questions. He probably wouldn't look at it, but it would probably be passed along to someone in the appropriate department who might just give you an answer.

This will probably be made around EU guidelines and support sideloading if all else fails.
The new iPhones and iPads will support out-of-the-box sideloading. And I am very happy. Especially with emulators being much easier to install on Apple devices.

Hoping that visionOS would also get their own VR emulators through built-in sideloading, especially with 3D support for the 3DS, PS3 (when RPCS3 gets an Apple Silicon port) and Virtual Boy.
Imagine if an iPad/iPhone and an Apple Vision Pro can practically link up together for a VR version of Citra. The iPad/iPhone with a stylus and a Gamevice would serve as the 3DS bottom screen while the top screen would be VR with 3D at max.

It is pretty funny though that I've seen people elsewhere in the SAME post citing how the old 3D sucked as glasses were too cumbersome, but are perfectly happy to sit a heavy intrusive device on top of their head, which will also obscure your hearing, so you won't get Atmos, they think that sound like a better less clunky method of getting 3D!!!

You will get Apple's version of ATMOS which is spacial audio in this case in stereo.

I like VR but I'm not convinced Apple can market it. Most people don't want this type of thing and it's quite possibly very bad for your eyes.

I'll look into the 3rd gen version of this if everything goes well and I am interested by then.

I may get the Meta Quest 3 in the fall.... maybe. It looks cool and kind of fun and it's only $500.

If Apple is their AR/VR spacial mapping for audio the sound should be incredible.

It will be a niche until they can shrink it and shrink the price. It could be great for HT but it isn’t replacing the tv.

On the one hand ... it's not more expensive.
On the other - that's 7 units of the Quest 3 which looks quite like the same thing.

It's not fully confirmed, but Norman Chan said he watched a scene from Avatar 2 and it was in 3D, HFR, but he doesn't confirm it being true 4k
It did feel like the theatrical experience he said, which is what matters imo.

Yeah,

I didn't watch the release info from these and it does seem like at least Di$ney is on board to get some type of 3D to thing thing.

So... sorry... I didn't realize 3D would be back but I guess we shall see.

I think Di$ney is waiting to see what this thing will do in terms of sales and movie interest. If it's going to be the next tech hype like the iPhone back in 2007 they might jump aboard to release all their stuff in 3D on Disney+
