Most were unaware of the audio issues, and not to mention it was already selling before it came out. The FUNimation Shop sold out about a month in advance.

So, what was the issue with the Japanese track?

Only things I've heard about with watching the show in Japanese is there are some subtitle differences when going from 2.0 to 5.1, and also the epilogue (which was never dubbed) can only be watched in 5.1 and not on 2.0 like on the Bandai release. I've also heard the 5.1 track is a bit tinny, particularly the center channel.

Various links.

Hi guys
VERY sorry to enter this thread just for...asking
but I'm unable to find any info, anywhere.

does anybody have a Samurai Champloo DVD vs BD caps comparison?
and by BD I mean the better re-release, don't care about the original Funi one

also FMP and FMP 2nd raid would be nice, though maybe I'm pushing my luck

oh and big thanks to BigOnAnime, Naiera and all the others for the awesome job

With Samurai Champloo, there apparently was one such comparison, but it's lost as Mania shut down. Would be nice to see how the Geneon DVDs hold up to FUNi's newer BD (the old one was concluded to be a downgrade because of all the DNR).
https://web.archive.org/web/20140406...om/notice/1294
(Under US Releases see "R1vs.BD" which results in a dead link now)

As for FMP!, there were comparisons, but those are gone too because again, Mania shut down (still pisses me off, 15 years worth of posts gone). From what I remember on one of them, I think it was season 1, the FUNimation BDs were quite the upgrade over the ADV DVDs. Would like to see that comparison again.

Also I'll leave this below. It's just caps from Fumoffu, but he did say stuff regarding how the BDs overall turned out. With TSR, I heard the OP on the BD suffered from dropped frames, but the DVD was unaffected.

I would buy TSR, Basilisk, Gunslinger Girl, and Samurai Champloo on BD if they were redone using their current upscaling methods.

Context on why the ADV DVDs had dot crawl: Back in the day it was concluded after a while that Kadokawa was intentionally sending composite masters to companies due to reverse-importation fears (different DVD region codes can't stop people, it's easy to get around). Some shows that were affected include: Girls Bravo (though IDK why FUNi has composite masters too, their streams look HORRIBLE), The Melody of Oblivion, Scrapped Princess, Maburaho (from my own experience I'd say that's another), and Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu. When Kadokawa Pictures USA was established, suddenly composite masters disappeared, which further led people to conclude their theory of Kadokawa doing it out of reverse-importation fears was correct.

Regarding Samurai Champloo, according to this comment on amazon, the newer BD release has exactly the same discs as the old one.

It doesn't.

Though apparently the Anime Classics DVD release re-uses the Geneon singles DVDs, which is a bit strange given FUNimation's distribution deal with Geneon ended more than 6 years ago. What's more strange is how the Geneon logo is apparently on the disc art for the Blu-rays. I know they were on the production committee, but they don't exist anymore (Only Geneon Japan still does, and they're now called NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan), and FUNi got the show from flying DOG (an anime label for Victor Entertainment).

Finished the first disc of Psycho-Pass S1 (UK) and while I enjoyed it very much so far, the PQ issues were a bit distracting, even with picture setting adjustments. Since I can read a bit of German, I looked up a review of the German release. The German Blu-ray has quite a high average bitrate (37720 kbps) and it doesn't seem to have the elevated brightness that's plaguing the UK/US release. According to the reviewer there are also only a very few scenes with banding. Here’s the kicker: it’s a Kazé release. Reviews on aniblu.de (reviewer went on hiatus in 2015) and nanaone.net seem to show that the German Kazé releases from the last two years or so can be quite competent, although not completely flawless. Khazi FR/UK should take note of that.

thank you VERY much for all the info Big-on-A
had absolutely no idea about that website "Can you moe?"
and yeah, such a shame about mania

bah, I'll get the Samurai Champloo re-release anyway. reading here and there it seems the grain was re-applied, as with the DVDs (the original BD was heavily filtered)
As much as I don't like buying BD releases for early 2000s stuff, I'll make an exception here, it can't be that bad

FMP I'll probably buy the Japanese boxset
It's true that the Funi release suffered from dropped frames. That's typical early 2000's Anime, OP/ED running at 30fps.
That's why the Jpn release is 1080i

edit:
thanks a bunch, down there

Can you moe? was just the name for muhootsaver's (who was on AnimeOnDVD as well back in the day) blog. If you look at older threads on Fandom Post, particularly in the JP forum, WTK would quote his blog quite a bit up until he abandoned the blog (last post can be seen here). The domain has since expired, that's why I used an archive.org link. I still keep that link handy because many of the things it linked to were still useful. That's actually how I got the links to many of hissatsu's comparisons I later embedded in this thread that were posted before Fandom Post existed.

I really don't get why they've set up Episode 25 in such a weird way. They actually have the ending authored three separate times. On disc you have episode 25 with the ending like normal and nothing afterwards, then there's another ts that has the ending + epilogue with silenced 2.0 tracks, then another ts with the ending + teaser with a silenced 5.1 track. Surely it would've made more sense to tack the epilogue onto the actual episode with Japanese audio/Eng Subtitles playing back on each track...

I agree somewhat about the 5.1 track as Funimation's BD audio never sounds right to my ears. Apparently the way they master their audio at low volume is to blame.

Very late reply, but in a 2ch discussion from way back in 2013, it was pointed out that the Japanese audio from episode 7 on the UK/AU release was taken from the broadcast version instead of the home video version (2ch discussion (Starts at post 238)). Around the 20:50 mark you can see and hear Sayaka strike four times on the home video version, whereas on the broadcast version you can only see and hear one strike. I haven't seen this issue being reported on any English website.

Might have something to do with the fact that in Australia it airs on a kids tv station and I believe that uses the broadcast masters instead of the home release masters so maybe there was a mix up (I can't actually view this hiccup for myself as I only have Volume 1 of the Australian release).
