I read almost everything in this thread just to keep up. So this is the place to talk about domestic anime blu ray video quality then?

I just bought Children Who Chase Lost Voices from the re-released Sentai Selects catalog on BD. I haven't seen the movie entirely yet, but I did check a few scenes and I was blown away by the awesome video quality. Knowing Sentai bad reputation for poor encodes, I think it's a different matter for their movie releases. I check the file size on the disc itself which is over 35GB in total, I'm guessing it's probably 28-30GB with the video alone. The bitrates must be pretty high up there, but I'll check on that later.

Has anybody got any video info on this Anime release?
https://www.amazon.com/Arpeggio-Blue...ggio+blu+steel

They crammed all 12 episodes on a single disc, and that just doesn't sound good to me at all. I really want to get the show, but I don't know how the video quality turned out unless they used insane encoding techniques.

The new release of Children Who Chase Lost Voices is much improved over the original one. I thought that was mentioned in this thread?

Sentai in particular like to put 12 eps on one disc. The result isn't necessarily terrible, but it's impossible to do great things that way, of course.

Nice, I'm glad I waited this long to get this movie. What about Garden of Words? Is the current release really good in video quality?

Seemed fine to me. You might want to check out the Japanese release (with English subtitles) if you're a fan and want the absolute best.

Use Tenso if you want to save money and buy a used copy on Amazon Japan.

EDIT: OK, there isn't much to save on this one But as a general tip for getting Japanese releases cheaper, the above is useful

I didn't know the Japanese release has subtitles for Garden of Words. However, I do like to have it with an English dubbed since it sounded good in the trailers, and enjoy the movie without having text on the screen.

I'll just get the Sentai release instead.

I have no problems affording JP releases, but thanks for that anyway. I only buy JP releases for the movies I really care about and want the best quality out there like the Madoka Magica movies, Girls und Panzer der film, Steins Gate, and a few others I own.

I'm not sure precisely how much it affects the finished product's PQ, but Sentai's release of Garden of Words uses only about half of the JP release's video bit-rate (34.5 mbps vs 19.2 mbps).

If I remember correctly, the Sentai version have the "wrong brightness" problem. Japanese edition is not top-notch either, as it was lowpass filtered on complex scenes, and suffer from slight color banding, especially on complex scenes.

I'm sure the Japanese Garden of Words looks marginally better but there is nothing really wrong with the American Blu-ray. It's a beautiful presentation.

I'm not sure the IRE black levels have been improperly converted from Japanese to American standards. That is usually noticeable and I don't remember seeing it, though I admit it's been awhile since I watched the disc.

Well I'll get Garden of Words later on.

So right now I wan to get the Madoka Magica TV series. There is no way to get the Japanese anymore since it's very expensive now. So how about the Aniplex of America version the one currently out for about $120? How does it compared to the original Japanese release? I heard the Italian release was the best one of them all when it comes to video quality, and I'm leaning towards that one, but I can't seem to find screenshots comparisons anymore. So which one should I go for?

If you can understand Italian the Dynit edition is the way to go, top notch quality and wayyyy cheaper than the JP or AoA version.
If not, go for AoA.

It's exactly as good, as are 99% of Aniplex of America releases.

It states that they are as good as Sentai/FUNi or better. From what I've seen, definitely better, but I don't have numbers. We're not talking Japanese quality though.

Default Steins;Gate Movie BDInfo

Here's the BDInfo for Funi's release of the Steins;Gate movie. Looks to be a very bare-bones BD-25 w/ a 21000 kbps video bitrate and 16-bit Dolby TrueHD audio. The English 2.0 track is a dub-cast audio commentary, which is obviously worthless since they had absolutely nothing to do with the production of the film itself.

I don't have a full BDInfo scan of the Japanese version, but its video bit-rate was 37749 kbps and its audio was in 24-bit DTS-HD MA.

I know, it's just -- for a regular TV series release -- it feels like a case of setting the bar a little low when you say it's "at least as good as" a company with the issues Funi has, and a company that crams 12 episodes on one disc.

Wow, just wow. I'm so glad I got the JP release which I just got in the mail yesterday. If you really want, I can pull the info on the JP release. Anyway, lower bitrates doesn't always translates to bad video quality. I got the Psychic School Wars from Funimation, and the bitrates were a bit lower than the original JP release, but it look impeccable to me and couldn't tell the difference at all especially when I did a screenshot comparison. However, knowing how badly Funi screw up with the TV show of Steins Gate, I decided to play it safe and import the JP version of the movie. I like to see screenshot comparisons of this movie.
