That's like saying that "I think most McDonald's are pretty nice - on par with Burger King".
That's not a very high standard. I've been in Walmart twice in my life. I will never enter one again. And for things that I would consider buying, the prices were not less expensive than my local stores. They will never get my business for any number of reasons. |

It just might break $50 million next week. The Top 20 list hasn't been released yet, but according to HMM, Deadpool sold 72% of all the titles in the Top 20. And that includes Star Wars.
Star Wars debut week sold 82% of the units in the T20, and it was a $93 million week. http://www.homemediamagazine.com/res...s-charts-38127 |

Once again, year over year for the week means nothing - that's simply an accident of what gets released in any given week. What's important is cumulative year to date.
And in that regard, it's fairly positive. Cumulatively, year-to-date, BR is up 9.26% in revenue and 5.72% in units. It has a 37% physical market dollar share, and a 24% unit share, better than it's been, but still embarrassing seven years into the format, IMO. Only 8 of the top 20 titles from the current week sell more on BD than DVD, but even that is better than usual. At its current pace, it will hit exactly $2 billion in sales (U.S.), but to stay on that pace, it would need the equivalent of another Star Wars and Deadpool. The current X-Men movie and possibly the Alice in Wonderland sequel might provide that. If there was a third movie that had really big sales or 2-3 more films that combined had really big sales, BR could wind up doing the best it has ever done. That would be a real boon for the format. But while things look pretty good, especially considering the competition from streaming, it's still below 2014 and 2013. But companies tend to look back just year-over-year and from that perspective, BR is having a good year so far. The biggest problem is that it's still a completely hit driven market. In 2015, the top 100 titles constituted 55% of all units sold and 71% of all dollars. I don't have exact data for 2016 because "the-numbers.com" runs a few weeks behind Home Media Magazine, but it looks to be pretty much the same. The problem with that is that it doesn't encourage the studios to do catalog titles and restorations and it encourages retailers to stock fewer titles. One could probably stock the top 200 titles only and get 90% of the sales they would have gotten if they had stocked 20,000. |

By the way, I have never been better off than the last couple of years catalogue wise. Some great labels and titles I thought would NEVER get a Bluray release. Even Criterion are UK now! ![]() Oh, don't forget Batman V Superman. Regardless of the films quality, that should do very well. |

Period covered is from the first week in 2012 to 5-21-16. Sorry no date formatting, so Jan 2012 is "1", Jan 2013 is "53", etc.
Notice that Blu-ray is finally in positive territory (up 3.4%), after 2 years of being negative. Here is the same chart posted 4 months ago (Blu-ray is the Blue line this time). |
