It's a big step down from classic Fulci and despite a fairly funny trailer, it's not a laughable bad movie. It's more of a poor, boring Poltergeist ripoff. The few Fulci trademarks are not worth it if you're not a big fan. |

I'm not a fan of either, but I think Manhattan Baby may still be better than Murder Rock. At least Manhattan Baby has Giovanni Frezza (aka blonde italian boy whose face you recognize from a few classic Italian cult films) and a good score.

Were those three (the trilogy) a financial success? I thought only Zombi was.

im not sure what the numbers were. but he was making a ton of movies from 77-84.
i assume he must have been successful as he was making two movies a year for a short period of time. contraband and city of the living dead in 1980, black cat, beyond and house by the cemetery in 81. new york ripper and manhattan baby in 82. conquest, new gladiators and murder rock in 83. i guess there is always the possibility that new york ripper was deemed too violent and controversial and did not make money. but at the time of grindhouses and drive-ins, thats exactly what the crowd would have wanted. but if wasnt successful, then how did he get funding for three movies in 83? as fulci wasnt as well respected as argento, im guessing these had sporadic, regional releases and weren't in a ton of "respectable" movie houses. maybe they got screwed out of money by all the alternate titles. who knows? throw in that fulci never seemed to get recognized for his talent... that does bring up an interesting point. did he come with the idea of the gates of hell trilogy was this something mentioned by a fan examining his work later on in a period of resurgence? |

I got mine last week -- it's a very solid transfer, with some great extras. The chat with Frizzi is almost an hour long and discusses his entire career working with Fulci, and includes a lot of footage of him and his band rehearsing.
