Did not see one here, and it appears plenty are buying one of these models, so we should have a place to discuss.
I just replaced my 6mo old Onkyo 605 with a 1909. The 605 was a great rcvr with excellent hdmi pass thru, but the Denon offers that along better SQ (IMHO) and a much more detailed and more accurate Audyssey setup. |

I purchased a Denon AVR-789 yesterday. I can't hook it up until Friday. I've always bought Pioneer or Yamaha. This is my first Denon. From all of the reviews that I've read, I'm sure I'll be pleased with its performance. I'll keep you posted.

I finally had a complete day off to hook up my new Denon AVR-789. The auto calibration went fine and I have no issues with its performance whatsoever. I do have 2 minor questions however:
1) I cannot program the Denon remote for my wife to watch TV on our Panasonic plasma. I've tried every code and no-go. My Harmony One works fine for me though. 2) My Paradigm sub seemed unusually loud when I played Dark Night on Blu. When I made all of the initial connections, I turned the volume on the sub all the way up so that the Denon would control it and make any adjustments needed. Was this wrong to do? Should I turn the sub's volume to halfway and re-calibrate? Any suggestions/advice always appreciated. P.S. The wife also bought me a Pioneer Elite DV-48AV, but that's another thread... Mike ![]() |

When I set up my 1909 it said to set the sub at the 12'oclock for volume and the crossover to the highest frequency possible, then run the calibration. I had some issues with Dark Knight as well, but was related to quiet dialog. I haven't gone through the custom setup stuff yet, but I'm thinking I will soon so I can really tweak the sound. Really like the 1909 a lot though. ![]() |

Dark knight does have muted voices at times, then others the sound effects seem overall muted (armored car chase), but it was meant this way.
I'm still loving my 1908. If you follow the audyssey thread setup at AVS, it measures everything out excellent. |

Thank you for the advice. I re-calibrated and all is well. I have the upgrade bug right now and there's no stopping me.

I have the 1909 same problem with my sub, Paradigm as well, just turn the sub down until you get a volume your happy with. I read a lot of forms on this problem and is very common with Denon receivers but the main solution is just to turn down the sub until your happy

I felt my Klipsch Sub-12 was too loud at first, but after a week i actually prefer it. I calibrated with the volume at halfway. Id also recommend using the db adjustments in the Denon menu, take it down a db at a time until you are happy.
Another issue, for downfiring subs, is that they are annoyingly boomy on a carpet floor. I put a sheet of mdf under mine and it tightened it up. |

Please give me opinions! I have been looking at the AVR-789 for a while now. I was going to buy it from Amazon for $599, then I found the AVR-1909 at Best Buy for $649. $50 either way won't break the bank, but I don't know which way to go. I went to the Denon website and did a comparison and the only difference is the AVR-789 has Video Conversion –Composite to S-Video to Component, the AVR-1909 does not, but the AVR-1909 has Video Conversion – Composite to S-Video to Composite, the AVR-789 does not. I don't know if either of the two features would be useful to me! Which would you buy???

the 2 receivers are almost identical in every way. Main reason for 2 of the same is, 789 sold more in big box stores, 1909 higher end stores. I do know the 1909 has a metal front while the 789 is plastic. Other than that almost identical.

I have the Denon AVR 789 and I love it. I used to have a Sony AVR; while it did the job for the time; I longing to want more out of an AVR once True HD and Digital HD codecs came out. I have to say, I think the 789 is one of the best budger receivers out there. People say that they are difficult to set up; I think it wasn't that bad. It puts out great sound to my speakers and I couldn't be any happier at the moment. My upgraded set up will do the job perfectly for me for the short term future. I would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for one in this price range.

Well, we have one of these in the Speaker and Subwoofer section. So why not in the AVR / AMP section!
I will start the Denon thread as a PROUD owner of a Denon receiver which I love! We can use this thread to help out new Denon owners with questions and for people considering Denon receivers. Welcome my fellow Denon owners! |

At first I thought I had bought a unit too advanced for myself, but have grown to love the thing. I fire it up every minute I,m home,
I know my down stairs neighbors loved Korn blasting at 1.00am this morning. I just wish I knew what it sounded like down there. ![]() |
