I started hittng the gym again at the end of July once baseball and softball were done for my son and daughter…..i was coach on both of their teams.

I’ve been able to maintain 186 for quite some time now. I’m 5’9” right now, wouldn’t mind dropping 5-10 lbs.

Got it in my head that I want to run a marathon….i had a pretty bad health scare 2 years ago…….decided that I wanted to take care of myself a little better and prove to myself that I can accomplish something like this.

Talked to my brothers and sister, we decided we’re going to train for that Dopey Challenge at Disney and aim to run it in 2020. It was originally my sister’s idea, my twin brothers are gym rats and the one has been a long distance runner since high school.

So we’re going to make a big family vacation out of it, us 4 kids, our spouses/girlfriends, the 4 grandkids and then our parents.

I’ve never had any kind of endurance…..so I was starting from scratch. Was only able to go about 15 min. before I wanted to puke when I first started. I’ve been hitting 2.5 miles or better in 30 minutes regularly for about a month now. Last week I made 2.63 miles in 30 min. I’ve been running 2x a week and then mixing in 1 session where I lift.

My wife and I are going to run our 1st 5k on thanksgiving morning in a couple of weeks.

You find some special blister bandages and get back out there, you are only walking so thats going to be easier on them than running
no offense, but you don't know what kind of work he does or how agile he needs to be efficient on his job and from a medical standpoint your recommendation of just sucking up the pain/blood/tears is just an accident waiting to happen. Of course one needs to push their limits to improve, but everything is to a point.

Well done! That's great to have a clear goal to work towards. Good luck for your thanksgiving run, let us know how it goes.

I finally have a goal. I also have a personal trainer who I'm hoping to see once a month (would see him more but that's what I can afford). Ideally since I'm 5'3.5" and female I want to be at around 135lbs. I'm at just under 160lbs so I've got some ways to go.

Just did a spin class this week and I'm still feeling it 3 days later! Still, every journey starts somewhere.

Too many people look for excuses NOT to work out, blisters on feet is not a valid reason to cut working out. My example of running shortly after rolling my ankle is something I wouldn't recommend to anyone, and I at 41 don't weigh much more than I did in high school when I was a little too skinny.

If he was really into his workouts, he wouldn't let something like a few blisters keep him from working out when there are ways to combat it

Thanks Captain Obvious... at least having good cardio health generally leads to a longer healthier life, last thing I want to be is an old person who gives up and doesn't do anything. Keeping active is much better

true......but being in shape works in my favor.

when my wife starts to look at me for playing video games, watching Lord of the Rings, or reading Harry Potter, i can just take my shirt off and buy myself a little more time w/her.

The best thing to do is an alternate form of cardio. Running is not the only cardio workout in the world. I have a foot injury right now, but I can still ride a bike without much pain. It's just until it heals up and then back to running.

ran 3 miles on the track at the local high school last night.

none of this 30 min. on a treadmill stuff.

finished it in 33 min. 30 seconds.

may not be a stellar time......but the fartherest i ever made it in 30 min. was 2.63 miles.

never stopped to walk, ran at the same pace the entire time. i think that is what i'm most proud of.

I do not run to add years to my life. I run to add life to my years.

I run between 150 and 170 miles every month, and I run five days a week. My rule is never to take consecutive rest days, so I run at least every other day, even during the dead of winter when temperatures are below freezing.

For me, running is a great way to put the day into perspective. After a long workday dealing with complicated stuff and worrying about grown-up concerns, I find that the simplicity of only having to think about running from point A to point B at the end of the day is therapeutic and refreshing. I also running the roads and trails around my area, especially during leaf change season right now.

This past weekend, I completed my 49th race of a marathon or greater distance since I started running marathons in 2009.

At the beginning of 2005, I weighed roughly 400 pounds, I could barely run a mile, and I was getting to the point where my weight and unhealthy diet were interfering with my ability to enjoy simple things on a day-to-day basis. I always remember this on those days when I don't feel like getting exercise or on those days when I'm tempted to overeat.

Staying in shape is tough, but it's easier and a lot more fun than the alternative. I know from experience.

Running may not help me live longer, but it does remind me that I'm alive, and that it feels great to be alive. There's just something awesome about stepping out my front door and using the body that nature gave me.

I mean, I own almost 1,300 Blu-rays, so I can couch potato with the best of them when I want. Haha. I like to have a good balance between that and seeing the real world while running outdoors, though.

Reminds me of that line from The Witches Of Eastwick: When I die, I don't want to be healthy.

True dat, bro. When I started exercising I felt so much better. I used to come home, eat stodgy food and then pretty much lounge on the sofa all night, but now I come home and actually do activities and stuff. I can still settle down after 9pm and chill, but that's because I want to, not because I'm too tired to do anything else.

I am all for that too, with the reduction in daylight combined with my dislike of running in the dark I tend to hit the gym a little more and generally just hit one of the cardio machines or rotate through a few. Figure that way I have less wear and tear on my arthritic knees, though my running form is modified in a way where I don't put that pressure on the joints
