Because the studio who owns it hasn't decided to release it yet.

Well it bombed at the box office with a loss to the tune of 7 million dollars. Regardless of quality movies like that rarely get any kind of justice on home video (Ex: "Quiz Show"). BUT this movie has the advantage of being directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who's a pretty hot director right now, so there may still be hope. If it does get a release it'll probably be bare bones and you can bet it'll say "From the Academy Award winning director of 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' & 'Gravity'" on the cover.

Would also love to see this get released on BD, one of my favorites growing up. I watched the 2 minute preview for the HD master they have on VUDU and it looks pretty good. If it never comes out on BD I might just have to buy it on digital even though I hate doing that.

This and The Secret Garden are in desperate need of a BD release. The HD versions on Vudu look good, but could be even better with new scans. I'd buy them instantly on day one!

Me too! I have always loved both of these films and they absolutely hold up. They're visually gorgeous, and have rich, complex emotional arcs. It's probably telling that A Little Princess was a bit of a bomb - even in the 90s, I guess there wasn't much room for family films that weren't saturated in hyper-contemporary pop culture references and obnoxious humour. It'd be nice if these films could finally get their due with proper bluray releases

Could we maybe stop misrepresenting the financial results of this movie - once and for all?

For one thing, $10m at the box office was a perfectly adequate performance for a G-rated movie that didn't rely an an existing franchise or popular characters that were known to kids at the time.

Secondly its home video release was quite a bit more profitable than the theatrical run:
Quote:
A Little Princess was much more successful in the home video market than in theaters. As of April 1997 Warner Bros. sold two million copies for an estimated $32 million in video revenue—the studio receiving 75%—greatly exceeding box office gross. The film was first released on VHS and LaserDisc on September 19, 1995 and was first released on DVD on November 19, 1997.
WB definitely didn't lose money on this movie - not to mention it also got 2 Academy Award nominations!

Best bet for a Blu-ray release is from either Warner Archive or Shout Factory.

Or Criterion. They've been licensing a few WB movies and have a good relationship with Cuarón
