I think Disney should consider adding it quietly at some point if only to cause a temporary stir to create free publicity for the streaming channel. Eventually no one will care it's on there just another Disney classic. I wouldn't count on it they seem to PC to have the guts to add it.

So after 2039 it's possible for another studio to release it as it would become public domain. Hoping this film gets a 4K restoration but by 2039 it will be 8K restoration. The film elements I hope are being preserved.
In 20 years we are only going to go from 4K to 8k? How limiting.

Never a legal release in the US.

Plenty of VHS overseas and at least 2 Asian Laserdiscs.

Lots and lots and lots of bootleg items or all varieties usually taken from one of those foreign releases, Sold at every flea market, comic-con, sci-fi conventions, Ebay, etc.

Plenty of European VHS releases and four releases on LaserDisc all from Japan and Hong Kong. It was shown on the BBC as late as 2006.

Disney refusing to release this film is pretty disingenuous. At least Warner Brothers owns up to their insensitive past, admitting that their older works are politically incorrect by today’s standards, and still allowing them to exist for public consumption. Trying to pretend that the past never happened helps no one.

It would be nice if they could add it to Disney+. My understanding is that they are already putting up disclaimers in front of other movies with what, by today's standards, are questionable and racially insensitive content. I don't see why they couldn't do the same for this.

This also seems like a good movie candidate to get the Movie Club exclusive treatment. That way it is not in regular stores. They could put a big honking warning on the listing on the site and even the box for that matter (not that I want a warning on the box, but I could live with it) if it means the movie actually getting released.

Just release the Blu-ray in Japan like they did the Laserdisc. Likely, probably not.

I like that idea though.

I always think it's sad that the work that gave the first Oscar to an African American man is hidden away.

Agreed. It seems Disney is being ridiculous in storing away this one with no release. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who agrees with their stance IMO.

I think releasing the Blu-ray in Japan or licensing the film to Criterion for a Blu-ray and DVD release is Disney's best bet. I think the Criterion idea is the best for Disney that way it gets out into the public domain for them and it's not released under the Disney label.

This film should be appreciated for the wonderful movie it is! it's sad Disney has to be so PC and bury it like it never happened.

This film deserves way better, it's a classic.

The LD has forced subs but should be the best quality transferred. I'm sticking with my VHS to dvd transfer
Just download the 35mm transfer. It's free. Never pay for pirates.

The complaint about this film that I have the most disdain for is, “Look at Uncle Remus all happy and singing! He was a SLAVE! He should be sad and miserable!”

God forbid someone find joy and music through hardship. *Rolls eyes*

Vengeful people who can’t see past their own noses.
