The FNF are sitting on a ton of new restorations and prints, the glacial pace that FA is doing anything with them is kind of annoying. I wish Arrow would get hold of them.

Uh-oh. Lobster Films uploaded their new 4K restoration of L'Argent (1928), a future Flicker Alley release. And there is that watermark again, as in Méliès: Fairy Tales in Color. Hope it's only for this trailer, but...

Does that watermark appear in Méliès' Fairy Tales? Is it on any other FA releases? I don't think I saw it on A Trip to the Moon. That's something I would have noticed.

That being said, there are a couple of times where the watermarks are glaringly obvious in darker scenes, like the opening of The Witch or Robinson Crusoe. It really is a shame that Lobster Films chose to use them at all.

But honestly, the watermarks are not enough for this blu-ray release to be totally spoiled for me. The content itself is fantastic, and it only gets better with repeat viewing. There has certainly been an immense amount of care given to these restorations, and I can't help but applaud and support such endeavors. The minor misstep (or major misstep, depending on your viewpoint) of adding watermarks may just have to be forgiven.

Regardless, I also will be sending a polite email to Flicker Alley expressing some disappointment. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if they will attribute using the watermarks to protecting their copyrights of their restorations, much in the same way that Melies used highly visible placards with his name, Star Films, “copyrighted”, etc. in many shots in his films due to piracy. Case in point: try searching A Trip To The Moon on YouTube and you’ll find the color version with Air’s soundtrack pretty easily, which would be just fine if it was uploaded by Flicker Alley or Lobster Films or even Air, but of course it wasn't. So if an email response from Flicker Alley uses that defense, again I wouldn't be surprised. I guess we’ll see what happens…

Trapped (1949), Repeat Performance (1947) and Los tallos amargos / The Bitter Stems (1956).

from http://www.noircity.com/

Quote:
The 35mm restoration of Trapped will be screened nationally as part of the FNF's NOIR CITY film festival programs in 2019, as well as being eventually released on Blu-ray and DVD through the FNF's partnership with Flicker Alley, which to date has distributed its restored versions of Woman on the Run (1950), Too Late for Tears (1949), and The Man Who Cheated Himself (1950). Other titles in the Blu-ray pipeline include restorations of Repeat Performance (1947) and the Argentine noir Los tallos amargos / The Bitter Stems (1956).

Watermarks are regrettable, but if that's the price of having 4K-scanned Melies on Blu-ray, it's acceptable.

False alarm, I just checked the cover. I was probably thinking of the copyright instead.

I just received an Amazon shipping notice for the Charley Bowers set. I can't believe that I'm getting it for that low of a price, but I'm not complaining.

I'll also join the chorus and say that the blu-rays of "The Last Warning" and "The Man Who Laughs" are excellent. I hope that Flicker Alley will also be able to release the other silent film restorations that Universal has been doing like "Skinner's Dress Suit."

I would love Skinner’s Dress Suit (I love the films of William A. Seiter).

Also I got the Charley Bowers set and am loving it. Was a blind buy but a great one.

Really looking forward to the upcoming Flicker Alley releases.

Aside from Amazon pricing mistakes, is there anyplace to wait for FA sales? BN 40% off blus used to be my go-to, but BN always puts a list price of $70 on them now, so that's hardly worth it.

Subscribe to Flicker Alley's newsletter, they have coupons quite frequently and I would pre-order directly as it always cheaper there even with shipping than Amazon.

Wow. I didn't believe it, but I just checked and all the single disc releases are at least $59.99 MSRP, with a "savings" taking it down to $50 and change. WTF is Barnes and Noble smoking with that? They are all MSRP $39.99 on Flicker Alley's website with many available to purchase for $29.99, so I guess B&N are just straight up making up higher MSRP's now? Good luck with that I guess. Next thing you know they'll have Warner Archive releases at $40.

Not a huge deal to me I guess - since I'm not sure I'd taken advantage of the 40% deal before for a FA release. The ones I have I either bought straight from Flicker Alley or through an Amazon deal (or price mistake). But still...odd on B&N's part. Like I said, hope they don't start doing that with other labels.

They really aren't acceptable. It's a low rent thing to do IMO.

I think I'll be staying away from watermarked releases. I initially took a "wait and see" approach to the Melies set to see if maybe it would be recalled (thinking it was a possible error when first reported). If there are more done the same way it will likely cause me to pass over them as well. This wasn't done on other Lobster restorations for other labels, so no idea why they felt the need to do it there on that Melies one. Hopefully this latest issue is strictly for the online trailer for L'Argent... i.e. not indicative they will scar portions of the blu-ray release with watermarks.

Now if it turns out it was just a "one time" deal on the Melies set, maybe my view will soften and I'll eventually just go ahead and purchase it. But if they start doing this on other releases? Pretty sure that would have the opposite effect....

Last Black Friday/Cyber Monday, Flicker Alley's site had a very solid sale going on. IIRC, they offered 20% off their posted prices and had free shipping.

To give an idea of the prices, here's what I picked up back then:
[Show spoiler]
Chaplin at Keystone DVD $47.96
Cinerama Holiday BR $23.96
Cinerama's South Seas Adventure BR $23.96
Fanchon the Cricket BR $23.96
Georges Méliès: First Wizard Set DVD $47.96
Little Annie Rooney BR $23.96
Méliès: Fairy Tales in Color BR $21.56 (Pre-Order)
Most Dangerous Game, The/Gow BR $22.37
This is Cinerama - 2017 BR $22.36
Windjammer BR $22.36

At the moment, I've got about 10-14 titles I'm hoping to pick up this November. Time will tell what sort of sale they intend to have this year...

Outside of their Black Friday sale, I've seen the occasional reasonable discount pop up on Amazon somewhat randomly.

Not to mention some of their pre-order titles for the first 48 hours or so lot of the times they offer free shipping for that limited time. That was the case when The Lost World came out anyway which I grabbed for $29.95.

Though speaking of Amazon, the one title where there price consistently seems to beat Flicker's is on Children of Divorce though that's usually the exception rather than the rule.

Little Annie Rooney is $22.50 on Amazon this morning. I'm grabbing it....it's the best price I've seen on it.

Any advice on Fanchon the Cricket for $27.99?

I wonder if Amazon is checking customer interest at different price points....

The Target B2G1 sale is applying to Flicker Alley releases.

Target lists all the ones I want at a bit over $38 (the pennies vary for some strange reason). So if you can find three you want, each would be a bit over $25.

Target doesn't stock all the FA releases, but if you search for "Alliance Studio movie," you'll get the ones they have.
