Are there people that work at Synapse full time or is it just some company ran by 2 guys in their spare time?

I like this company but for real they're incredibly slow. Heck I'm shocked Popcorn came out when it did.

Note to self. When licensing any of my movies for bluray and DVD release, add the clause that forces the label to release it by a certain date so that I will get full royalties, rather than tying up my films for years...

I would imagine most of the licenses are flat fees up front then maybe some % of sales rather than solely % of sales.

So where's the product?

It's two guys but I think the home video thing might be a side gig or even just a hobby where one guy (the hands-on one, the other guy is probably just the "exec producer" ) works on restorations when he has the time in between another full-time job. Or Don may be well-off man who's semi-retired and loves movies but is in no hurry to get them out. Either way, it's just a wee bit frustrating for fans. I get that they want to do things right but when 5 years go by....

It's 2 guys working everyday. They're meticulous too. Getting demanding is inchin on entitlement territory, tbh. It literally is what it is but I'll take that over crummy Shout or Criterion bungles.

You negotiate for an advance and most labels barely want to give you anything unless you are a big studio. Then you get royalties. It your movie is not released for a year, it means a year of dead time where you can't sell it to someone else and you make nothing. The advance normally gets subtracted from royalties.

Big studios require an up front advance and a guarantee of a certain amount of royalties over the length of the license.

I just wish they’d finish projects before starting new ones. It seems to me like whenever they pick up a big license, whatever else they have gets put on backburner

I'll happily take a film that's slightly less than perfect and then rebuy said film 5 years later (Blue Underground) rather than wait for 5+ years for said title to be released once.

The worst part of Synapse licensing films, for me, is that they essentially squat on them making a release by anyone else impossible. I'm still waiting for my Black Roses and Rock N Roll Nightmare Blu Rays and I know everyone else has their wants that are going on 5+ years as well. Patience is not saying anything when a film takes a year or two to release. When it's common knowledge a company has a film and just doesn't do anything with it it's no longer a patience issue.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this is not exclusive to Synapse. Lionsgate is just as guilty of this kind of thing. Except with Lionsgate they likely have no idea what fans are saying as they don't care to look. With Synapse, we know they lurk and are well aware of how they are currently perceived and simply don't care.

After reading about Evil Dead Trap on this forum a bunch, I came across the sequel for super cheap and decided I should grab the DVD for both.

Um, wow. Someone needs to upgrade this amazing horror film. And anyone who likes sleazy, artsy, atmospheric horror that pulls so many directions you never know what to expect, should pick up this DVD as a stopgap.

Undertaker (2012)

Kill me...

Having a 1.8 out of 10 IMDb rating, Synapse releases Undertaker from 2012. A low budget, post-outbreak zombie infection flick. It follows a now grown boy who is hired by families to kill an infected loved one and collect a recognizable body part so they can finally be put to rest.

There isn't much story, dialog, or action. There aren't many infected either. Costumes and make up are done well for what there is. With a short runtime of 65 minutes (6 of them being credits), the movie doesn't overstay its welcome.

Stylistically, colors are desaturated. Having a washed out look that is often used to portray a post-apocalyptic world. Sound effects are heightened as another stylized choice. Quality wise, detail is overall good. Due to the saturation, detail can be hard to make out in darker areas. I did notice a few moments of shimmering artifacts. Such as the fabric on clothing in an early scene and the grass in another.

Japanese with English subtitles. Includes a 20 minute short film On Your Back.

This won't be for everybody. If you get bored during slow paced movies then I would avoid this one. I personally enjoy films with this pacing and they don't come off as boring to me. I think a 1.8 rating is a bit harsh and I would give it along the lines of a 6/10. Not every movie needs an over complicated story or nonstop action to be entertaining. Besides the visual/sound style it doesn't come off as over artsy. If you enjoy these movies where not a lot happens (I find these the hardest to explain), then I say give it a shot. It's a lowered priced release and maybe these will help get some titles released we have been begging Synapse for.

I don't have the 88 version to compare it to, but I thought it looked pretty good, but not fantastic. A little soft here and there, but grain seemed to be resolved fairly well. Didn't notice it being frozen or missing anywhere, especially in daytime scenes. A solid 3.5-4 stars for PQ. Frankly, I forgot how dull the film can be at times. It is a giallo in certain terms, but not on my plate of examples I would recommend. I only viewed it in Italian, which IMO was the only way to go. Volume was very clear and clean and I did not notice any sync problems. The trailers are ok and the 3 short films were nothing that interested me, so IMO, the extras are kind of lame. It does have the CD soundtrack, which I know many of you guys love. I got it for a great price in the Target B2G1 deal, so not too much put out for it. The Synapse 2020 catalog came with it and I assume many may have seen it?? If not, the 'coming soon' section has all the titles people have been waiting for, and maybe a few new ones....
