Richard, I haven't followed your struggles over the past year or so all that closely, but I know you were one of the few professionals who really went the distance to optimize your releases for each format's strengths. And it had been truly saddening to see you get such a negative response from the deluded side of the hi-def crowd.
Here's to a 2008 that has none of that aggravation, and lots of splendid new releases. It's good to have you here! |

First the rabid praise. Thanks for the hardwork on Chronos and Nature's Journey. They both rock and earn me many Brag Right points when I have guests over
![]() And now the question. With Nature's Journey, I was pretty sure that I read that the pictures were all live pictures, and not CG. I was just wanted to make sure that was accurate. |

Rich, thank you for your participation in this forum. You will be a great asset. Glad to see you declare Blu Ray exclusive. I can't believe you waited that long.....
![]() A thread at AVS has popped up about your HD DVD exclusivity. Just thought everyone might wan't to go post and show support. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post12884192 |

The AVS thread shows why Rich made the correct decision. The way it's going it probably will get locked or deleted.
Edit: I was correct it got deleted! Last edited by PaulGo; 01-21-2008 at 04:33 PM. |

Great news that you are going to focus future efforts on Blu-ray only. I own Chronos and Nature's Journey and have enjoyed them both very much. ![]() As an AV geek, I especially look forward to the upcoming "codec shootout" disk. |

Richard we may have some progress! It hasn't been easy having a discussion with Ben because Amir keeps on interjecting his thoughts. Amir at times can be just plain rude (just not to me but others) but:

Richard / RBFilms,
I posted this question over in this thread at AVS, but just in case that one gets shut down because of red ant infestation... What is the ultimate goal of the codec shootout? Is it to test the theoretical ability of VC-1 vs. AVC or a real world example of performance? If it is the latter, why would you even want "help" in tweaking the end result? Currently, we only have a handful of HDM titles, so I guess companies can put in the resources to hand-tweak all the difficult scenes in the movie, but once HDM ramps up to DVD level production and title output (ie 100+ weekly titles), do studios really have time & money to be so careful? I guess I'm saying I'd like the test to be about straight-out-of-the-box performance of how most studios will actually use the codecs. I doubt Microsoft would provide support for each and every title, so we should only rely on in-house codec experience. This way, it would represent the real-world application and what consumers will actually see. Personally, I just want the best HD experience with all future titles, and I couldn't care less which codec was deemed the "best" but required an unreasonable amount of days of attention and hand-tweaking that we know studios won't do because of time/resource constraints. Your thoughts? Thanks, dko1971/chefboy1 |

Hi,
A red ant infestation...I must say....that was quite humorous... ![]() The Ultimate Goal of the Audio / Video Codec Shootout is: * To provide a fair comparison of current technologies / codecs by using the exact same content under laboratory conditions to assure reliable and accurate results. * To provide reference material so people can evaluate for themselves the nuances between the different video encodes and audio resolutions and make their own informed decisions about what they prefer. * To educate consumers ... and perhaps even a few professionals as well ... on the merits, advantages, and real world benefits of high quality audio / video encodes that offer better fidelity and are more transparent to the source. * To promote awareness regarding ultra fidelity and how it enhances the overall entertainment experience. Regarding "help" with the encodes. We do not need help ... but I do not want anyone crying "foul" if the tests show something that they do not care to see or hear. Having certain people involved is designed to minimize these claims ... albeit .. we all know it will happen no matter what we do and how right we do it. It is inevitable. Quote:

I never went back there after my last statement. I would have like to have seen the signal to noise that got it shut down.
