Default 4k test patterns ON Sony UHDs

from the avs forum

"if you have any UHD Blu-Ray discs from Sony(Ghostbusters, Spider-Man, The Shallows, Bridge on the River Kwai, etc) go to the top menu and press 7-6-6-9 on the number keys on your player's remote and you will be greeted with 23 HDR10 test patterns including rec.2020, dci.p3, and rec.709 color slides, black level patterns, grayscale bars, and white level pattern that goes from 100-10,000 nits so you can observe how the TV is tone mapping HDR10. You can press the chapter skip button to cycle through them and if your player offers the option press repeat so it doesn't change automatically."

That's great to know! Should be helpful in HDR calibration.

Great little tip, thanks for that!

How the hell is the average consumer (like myself) supposed to know stuff like this if it's not advertised anywhere by Sony themselves on the disc/ on the packaging.

Unless I've missed it, in which case, D'oh.

I guess they don't think the average consumer is interested, if you are your not an average consumer! They have HD test patterns on BDs too.

It's actually been around forever on Sony disc's. The 7-6-6-9 spells (SONY) on a phone keypad.

Had a little go on mine. On the nits greyscale, my TV shows everything decently enough up until about 1500 which is when it starts to really struggle before it just being pure white from 1700 onwards. It's not the best, but it's miles better than the LG I had before and I think is perfectly fine for my needs. During an average HDR movie viewing, I imagine my set probably doesn't get much brighter than around 700 nits but I am seeing a big difference. But these patterns did help me decide which picture settings mode I liked best (Custom over Cinema Pro, which seemed to add too much of a blanket orange tint to the image) so that's a bonus.

I'm watching Billy Lynn now (rubbish so far) and tried it out on the main menu.

What a waste of time. I was expecting some sort of step-by-step calibration tool where you step up/down brightness, colour, contrast, colours etc but it's just a series of squares. Disappointed.

Maybe you would enjoy the movie more if you were paying attention and not posting on a forum.

I figured it out on my first Sony Uhd. I used to love the different calibration screens on the Sony blus. Very accurate too.

Last week, I came home from work and my 6-year-old daughter greeted me by giving me a (accidental) swift kick to the bollocks.

That was infinitely more enjoyable than the first half hour of this film.

It's not really a tool like the THX Optimizer, it's designed for calibrators as test patterns.
