Were you able to get a comparison of nit differences, if any at all, between the Japanese and US UHDs?

I knew I wasn't having a placebo effect when noticing the better color grade on the US release. At least as far as the better contrast goes.

It also feels like the HDR is noticeably brighter on the US disc.

What I'm really interested in is if the Japanese LPCM 2.0 track on the Lionsgate UHD is encoded for Dolby Surround/Pro logic. If anyone can test that, I'd love to know if it takes advantage of 4.0 matrixed out audio. (The JP BD's LPCM 2.0 track was, as the film originally was mixed in Dolby Stereo theatrically)
Would you know how the PQ of the JP BDs fair against the Lionsgate BD?

Here's a link to Caps-a-holic's screencaps of the original Bandai JP BD and the new Bandai JP UHD.

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=6742&d2=12063&c=2490

All you have to do is compare them to the same caps of the Lionsgate UHD provided by NLScavenger in this thread to get a good idea of which version you prefer. Hopefully Caps-a-holic wil soon add screencaps from the Lionsgate UHD and BD to their database so you can more easily compare all the different versions.

IMHO, the Lionsgate UHD comes much closer to matching the original JP BD's color grade than the JP UHD does.

Do you mean the 1080p BDs? If so, I thought it was a bit obvious- the JP UHD comes with a remastered BD from the 4K remaster, which is the same master as the BD included with the Lionsgate UHD. Just probably has a WAY higher bitrate than the one included with the Lionsgate UHD, as the disc here has a piss poor bitrate and barely any optimization at all due to very bad bitrate optimization on the extras (the extras have equal if not higher bitrates than the main film!).

Quite a few pages back I did a nit comparison between the two. The US disc is pumped up.

EDIT: To give some extra context to what it is we're looking at here. These are waveform monitors. They chart the luminance levels and give us reading on how many nits something might be pumping. Don't pay attention to the screenshots too much as they have to be downconverted to SDR, sRGB, yadda, yadda, yadda. The monitors on the sides are what you should be looking at, as they will give a correct reading of the HDR content.

Personally, I feel that Lionsgate went out of their way to make this look flashy, while the Bandai-Visual took a restrained approach trying to match what the film would have looked like in 1995. My preference is more to being faithful to way the film was, but feel free to disagree.

There are also scenes that are supposed to be Standard Definition(which mean SDR too) and they got pumped too.

Are the flickering and freezing issues (Knives Out) usually addressable via firmware updates? It really bothers me knowing I spent $500 on a player with what I consider significant issues, especially since DV is a big reason I bought this player in the first place.

It's strange though why only specific movies? Must have something to do with how they are manufactured? I have dozens of DV titles and this the only one that has had DV playback issues

Does the included 1080p disc have an upgraded scan?

Naw. I don't disagree.

I'm all about creative intent. And I was personally happy with the Japanese UHD release in the first place.

Just love that Lionsgate at least didn't mail it in with this release.

Both discs have strong compression. If I had to pick, I'll probably just end up putting the Japanese disc into the steelbook since that art is so damn good.

Having the Japanese UHD on disc and the Lionsgate UHD for streaming, that’s a good way to have it for me tbh.

At least now we can choose between two very different flavors of HDR mastering.

What sucks is that one of those flavors only costs $20 bucks and the other costs $120!

Yes they are addressable via firmware, but no, Panasonic haven't released a fix. New players are coming with a newer firmware, but they haven't released it to existing players. I'm not sure if the existing newer firmware has the problem though as I don't have it.

I don't really even love the chant, but I think it fits better. While it's true that we hear the music for significant portions of the earlier movie, the end credits expand on it a lot more.

I see I'm not the only one experiencing the strobing in DV via Panny players. Disabling DV on my 9000 and watching in HDR10 corrected the strobing problem. I also played the movie via Vudu in DV and no strobing there either.

Watched the Lionsgate UHD with the original Japanese LPCM 2.0 track using Pro Logic and it uses the 4.0 matrixed out (Dolby Stereo) audio. It sounded great to me and will keep watching it this way in the future, even if the disc has an Atmos track.
