Its not so clear to me. At the moment I chose digital in the poll. Are we on a physical home video site? Yes but it's different. Blu-ray has better audio and video quality than its digital or streaming counterpart. By comparison, the games will be identical in all aspects. The disc serves no purpose other than to save some installation time (in most cases) and be a key. Sure you can resell them, but I hardly do that anyway.

The only argument that I'm glad my one x has an optical drive is that I could buy killer instinct physical which comes with a killer cuts cd. If it didn't, then digital would have been the plan. I have Steep for example on disc too, but it requires a completely new build to install over it so no time was saved buying physical, same with Halo MCC. I've bought the majority on my games digitally recently and am loving the convenience.

My viewpoint is this, that if you don't have any physical media at all that you'll be using then Digital could very well be something incredibly convenient but with a caveat that without internet connections, in any time where you end up between service providers etc. that you basically cannot buy any new games and out them on.

I agree when it comes to films there are more benefits to physical. And
Like you I don't resell games but for me there are a few other benefits that I see when it comes to gaming
1) physical makes better gifts
2) does not affect my cap
3) does not affect other members of the family
4) If I decide to retro game I know I can do that (reason I have never sold games or systems), I still have my original xbox, now I never DL anything from live, but if i did, and overwrote it, would I be able to re-dl it today (I don't know, it is a legitimate question)

Interesting numbers from Sony's financial call. That's a HUGE jump in Digital. you could attribute that to Covid but look at the numbers and you see that Physical didn't fall, it in fact grew YoY during the same Covid months.

So Covid didn't put people off buying discs, it's just a fact that Digital is massively increasing whilst Physical is remaining stagnant, which is only good for the industry really as it shows there's a massive amount of new players that were never there before.

49.8m games sold on PS4 during Apr-Jun 2019.
Digital: 26.4m
Physical: 23.4m

91m games sold on PS4 during Apr-Jun 2020.
Digital: 67.3m
Physical: 23.7m

Digital +154% YoY
Physical +1.3% YoY

Physical didn't decline, digital grew.

That's a big difference for digital's increase, though I still attribute it mostly to the lockdown situation. People couldn't go to stores that were closed, and it's faster for many to digitally download a game than wait for it to arrive by mail order when the mail system was impeded by the virus too. I imagine those numbers will decline if things return to normal again.
