JRiver MC 20 now has a WDM driver for Windows! That's right, you can now use your JRiver DSP, PEQ, and all of your other settings with all external programs!!!!!! That means if you have Jriver and PowerDVD - PDVD now has access to JRiver's DSP Studio!!!!! This is big time for computer audio folks!!!

What is it that you specifically like about JRiver versus the competition? Also, will this discussion include JPlay as well?

JPlay is invited to the party - however they are not connected ! There's a lot of fighting going on in the particular camps. I don't have a problem with either product myself.

What I like about JRiver vs the competition? Almost everything - but especially the DSP studio and the ability to transform your computer into a prepro. You have Room Correction, upsampling, DSD/DSX conversion - streaming ect. You can also use professional vst units with JRiver (that's part of DSP studio). With the newly added WDM driver - JRiver now appears as a sound device in Windows - enabling JRiver's sound processing to be used by all programs! It was this program that allowed me to can my prepro/receiver. On the video side - I love the processing used (I use Red October HQ), beautiful picture everytime!

Jriver is a tweakers dream - high customization, and it does just about everything! There is no one in the competition that can do everything JRiver can do. Plex and Kodi (formerly XBMC) are free, but seem to be more eye-candy and video oriented, iTunes - doesn't handle video like JRiver, and others like Ammare, and PureVinyl are pure MAC (and still don't handle everything that JRiver does). I'm really hooked on this particular piece of software!

I have a feeling we read those same threads.

What if one isn't a tweeker/tweaker (both spellings look good to me)? I'm just a basic user and use MediaMonkey for listening to my PC flac files. Does JRiver have an advantage over MediaMonkey in that regard?

Well if you're using MediaMonkey (like I did before JRiver) and you are doing everything bit-perfect, you have no need for dsp studio and the special things it brings to the table. I do all of my room correction through JRiver so I need it. You should be fine - but the way it handles your audio files (sorting, metadata, ect) and how you can use your phone as a remote - you may want to try it (free for 30 days)!!!!

Now if you start doing DSD, DSX, and the like - you may want to look at JRiver. I loved MediaMonkey's default format (.ape) and I still use it with JRiver. FLAC, .wav and .ape are my preferred lossless computer audio formats.

Tried out the WDM driver during lunch!!!! HUZAH !!!!!!! That was cool! I had HDHomerun TV quick view up and yes, I had all of my room correction and everything else available - I could even control the volume with my phone. One thing though - I need to see if JRMC needs to run in the background. Even if it must be open - its still cool!!!!! TMT6 and PDVD with real room correction!!!! Youtube too!!!! LOL!!!! This is great!

With the addition of the WDM driver - multi-channel convolution is now successful!!!! In other words - you can use convolution eq filters for more than just 2 channels - you can now use them for multi-channels. Previously, you had to input your measurements per channel for setups other than stereo. Now covolution will work on all channels - meaning one convolution filter set containing information for all channels (fewer PEQ and vst settings).

I'm going to try this out this weekend - several people on the JRiver forum have reported success!

P.S. I'm going to try to take measurements with Audiolense (which also features true time domain correction), export them, bring them into the JRiver Convolution filter and see how that works!!!!!

Wow!!!! If that doesn't beat all!!!! Audiolense now has multi-seat correction as well!!!! Might be a long weekend - but it's going to be fun (or frustrating )!

New news from JRiver -

JRiver now offers an audio only mode in theater view

JRemote is coming out with an app for Android!!!!

And this is old new but, I don't think I've expressed it here yet - JRiver is now cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux).

I believe I'm going to try out a linux box here very soon

I'm using the JRiver Gizmo app on my HTC One. Such a great app!

I'm still on the free 30 day trial (will buy though) and have been very pleased with JRiver MC20. I do appreciate the DSP studio quite a bit just to save several different EQ settings for heaphone listening sessions. Used solely in my 2 channel room, the room correction features are not important to me, although I did mess around with the pink noise for a bit.

Also like the flexibility to change skins so I can darken the screen presentation at night.

I also am on a free trial of SlyFox, (JRiver recommended) which is a necessary utility that enables encrypted BluRay disc playback through my music server. At present, MC20 cannot decode DTS HD Master Audio. You also need an external file to get that to work.

Overall I think an excellent product. It's intuitive ease of use is what I really like most, although they also maintain a very informative Wiki Support page and a very active user forum that is nicely moderated.

I give it a Big thumbsup!

I can't get by without JRiver.

I recently upgraded from 24 to version 27 all the while unsure it would work because my intel based 2010 Mac mini was now running unsupported macOS.

Then I got a shiny new M1 Mac mini as a gift and was excited to maybe replace my damaged but still good 2010 Mac mini. Well, that didn't work out. JRiver quickly made a Apple Silicon Native version for which I'm thankful but somehow Apple is convinced limiting HDMI output to 48KHz is a great idea.

So ... I'm still rocking the 2010 intel based Mac mini as my music server and while I subscribe to Apple One including Apple Music I still have not found a way to do all the things I want to do (mainly to listen to 5.1 24/96 music) without using JRiver.

Maybe I shouldn't try to eliminate it and rather should just realize how essential it is.

It has become essential...especially on the music end. I'm running DSD 256 files in my system and JRiver is a champ at playing it. Gave my new McIntosh a warm up workout and the resolution of those files is crazy! I just purchased 27 Master Licence as I will more than likely build a small linux machine.

I know, I know ...I keep saying I'm going to build a Linux machine - well to be truthful ...I did, but someone came in need of a computer (a teen) and I gave them my linux box. It has worked for about 5 years now (built it in 2016). I had an i5 processor and about 16gb of ram laying around and built the machine up.
Bhampton's post just reminded me how I enjoyed messing with Linux, and now there are improvements to Jriver - it think it's time to revisit this. Part of me wants to convert to linux totally!

I subscribe to Apple Music for the family but I have music of my own in higher quality than any online streaming service. Plus the services that offer high res audio sometimes simply upconvert. I like having my music without having to go online for it.

Nothing wins like JRiver. I can't find anything better.

I also keep a master license because it's a program I enjoy supporting.

I could build a linux box ... Might be fun. My past experiences with Linux were not so fun. Maybe one of the micro PCs running Linux would be a fun project. I'll keep in touch with my experiments if I go that route. For now my 2010 Mac mini makes a great server in Audio only mode.

Just started getting into high resolution audio and I'm doing the free trial but will purchase when done. Still have to run my new USB cable and just picked up Sennheiser HD 560S for listening. My Peachtree seems well-suited.
