Sorry I don’t agree with this take at all. I wouldn’t describe this as a comfortable watch or ‘too safe’. Structurally it may make it hard for some people to connect with the characters and their relationship but that’s not a safe choice, it’s actually an unusual choice to depict a love story with so many time gaps that leave it up to the audience to fill in those gaps.

I finally watched this for the first time last night.
I have mixed feelings about it. It looks and feels fantastic, but i found the story itself to be somewhat ordinary and derivative. Not sure how I feel about the 88 minute running time. Like that they cut out a lot of the crap that might typically be in a film like this, but it also meant that they couldn’t go very deep into any aspect of the story. It’s a very good film imo, but not a great one. And the ending...I hope no one took that as a noble thing to do. Because in that particular situation, it wasn’t. |

Watched it today. Sumptuously shot (each frame is so beautifully imagined), scored and brilliant in bits but the sum of the parts didn't cut it for me. It was too episodic and disconnected with flashes of pretentiousness. The movie needed to be a lot longer IMO to depict the intensity of love the leads held during a passage of 15 years. What doesn't work is that there's no change in their appearance in that duration which is forgivable had their been greater dramatic intensity in the circumstances surrounding their lives that would justify their deep feelings for each other, given also that it was a time of war. Ultimately the movie feels like a cinematographer's and sound designer's vanity project.
EDIT: Anyone else thought Joanna Kulig resembles a younger Jessica Chastain ? |
