Criterion Cold War (2018)

Quote:
This sweeping, delirious romance begins in the Polish countryside, where Wiktor (Tomasz Kot), a musician on a state-sponsored mission to collect folk songs, discovers a captivating young singer named Zula (Joanna Kulig, in a performance for the ages). Over the next fifteen years, their turbulent relationship will play out in stolen moments between two worlds: the jazz clubs of decadent bohemian Paris, to which he defects, and the corrupt, repressive Communist Bloc, where she remains—universes bridged by their passion for music and for each other. Photographed in luscious monochrome and suffused with the melancholy of the simple folk song that provides a motif for the couple’s fateful affair, Paweł Pawlikowski’s timeless story—inspired by that of his own parents—is a heart-stoppingly grand vision of star-crossed love caught up in the tide of history.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES:
  • New 4K digital master, supervised and approved by director Paweł Pawlikowski and director of photography Łukasz Żal, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio Soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New conversation between Pawlikowski and filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñàrritu
  • Press conference featuring Pawlikowski and Żal; actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, and Borys Szyc; and producer Ewa Puszczynska
  • Documentaries from 2018 on the making of the film
  • Trailer
  • New English subtitle translation
  • PLUS: An essay by film critic Stephanie Zacharek
  • New cover by Katya Mezhibovskaya

Still need to watch this on Prime but if I like it (and I'm pretty sure I will), I'll pick this up.

I gave it a spin on Prime back in April and I thought it was just lovely; Sad and bitter but beautiful to watch. Tried getting my girlfriend to view it but she's not one for foreign films lol. At least I know what I can force her to buy for me around Christmas!

Great news, really glad to see this finally get a Region A release. I hope that "documentaries from 2018" includes all the extras from the UK bluray.

Now if only Criterion would pick Roma.

Btw, that’s a beautiful classy cover.

Glad to see this getting a physical media release, and it seems like a natural choice for the Criterion Collection. Hoping Roma is announced soon though.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see Criterion get this. A really beautiful and tragic film, with incredible cinematography. Joanna Kulig is absolutely breathtaking in this.

Still the favorite film I've seen this year. Already bought the AE release, but I'll double dip.

It could also incorporate these featurettes from YouTube:
The Cinematography - 2:32
The Making Of - 5:30
The Music - 3:09

I wasn't quite as impressed with this film as others, but definitely happy to read it will receive a Criterion imprint, and given the performances, cinematography and 4K master, will find a home on my shelf.

Ok, if Criterion and Amazon are working together, then Criterion MUST DO a release of "Suspiria".

That said, I definitely can't wait for this one. Truly a surprise of the best kind from Criterion.

I suspect it will be quickly forgotten.

I much preferred Ida.

Good announcement for fans though.
