USA Bones and All (2022) - January 31, 2023

Bones and All, the newest film from Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, Call Me By Your Name), will be released on Blu-ray on January 31st. This is an MGM release being distributed through Warner's MOD system (it will be pressed). I saw this romance/horror/road film in theater and thought it was very good. Mark Rylance was especially great in it.

Quote:
Love blossoms between a young woman on the margins of society and a disenfranchised drifter as they embark on a 3,000-mile odyssey through the backroads of America. However, despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and a final stand that will determine whether their love can survive their differences.

This means no slipcover and won't be carried in brick & mortar stores.

Is this WB's first MGM MOD? (so many acronyms)

Unsure about WB, but MGM did the same with this film Flag Day - https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Flag-Day-Blu-ray/302292/

Well, at least it's getting a release. I wasn't too sure if it was going to happen.

Bones and All is my favorite film of the year and I was really hoping for a 4K release but I’m surprised this film is getting a MOD release. I thought the film has done fairly well in the box office. I’m just happy that the film is getting a physical release nonetheless.

It is pretty strange to see a new release movie relegated to MOD blu-ray (I don't even see a DVD option for WalMart stores or whatever), but after Barbarian I guess I'm just grateful it is happening at all.

I think the reason this is an MOD release is because the subject matter could be too disturbing for stores to carry

If there’s no 4K disc I hope the digital copy at least redeems in 4K like so many of the MGM titles have recently.

I'd love to see the flash mob of Timothee fans in front of the offices of whatever entity dared tweet this rationale.

I honestly doubt the subject matter has that much of an effect as many of the stores were quick to carry "Hannibal" (both the film and the TV series) across multiple platforms for almost two decades. Given everything that's currently happening at WB right now, I've no doubt money's being tightened around the home video department as much as it is every other part of the company, hence the MGM acquisitions being so skimpy. Besides, didn't they also do similarly with "Three Thousand Years of Longing" (only that got a 4K release because of George Miller's history)?

No UHD? That's too bad.

The George Miller movie flopped just as badly and still got a UHD.

I was hoping MGM's move to Warners would mean more of their titles got UHDs, House of Gucci was BD-only when MGM was over at Universal last year.

Luca Guadagnino in 4K is a rare sight unfortunately. And even the ones we do get either go oop quick (Suspiria) or are set exclusives (CMBYN).

There's still hope it might get a 4K release in Italy because it has a different distributor there, like most Guadagnino films.

The Suspiria UHD from Germany also apparently had two technical flaws. They forgot to include the opening credits title cards over the opening scene, so the footage just apparently plays as the raw footage without the titles over top. And they also put the subtitles, which are supposed to be in certain colors, in the wrong colors, I believe.

I actually just checked my copy and yes, the subtitles are in red for both the German and French dialogue. The French parts (all 2 of them if I'm not mistaken) should be in blue.

As for the title cards, both the Acts and the technical credits are presented exactly like on the US disc, so unless that one is faulty as well, there's nothing wrong there.

It's a weird disc for sure, mostly because the color timing is so different compared to the BD. Having not seen it in theaters it's hard to say if it's true to the source or a Capelight homebrew release.
It's still the best version to own mind you, by default because the others are so botched (US - poor compression, UK - filtered, AUS - only 5.1 audio and the rest are missing the subtitles).

Yep, the US BD looks atrocious, the compression is like a 1990s Quicktime file.

I don't actually own the German UHD, I was just going on what others had reported in the thread for the US BD:

The German UHD has the same problem and worse still lacks the opening credits, which is just weird. Any release without the Dolby Atmos mix is DOA for me as that's a reference quality track. I keep crossing my fingers that another territory will do a proper 4K, but who knows if that will ever happen. For now I just keep going back and forth with the US BD, the German BD, and the Prime 4K stream but none of them are ideal. Sigh.

So I guess the digital copy for this is iTunes only or is it movies anywhere? I know most MGM titles are iTunes only. But I think Dog was movies anywhere.

Reports are Bones and All redeems into Vudu.
I think this is because Warner Brothers is distributing the title rather than MGM.
