Obviously, the Stargate seasons are only 480p. But my BD player is upconverting it. However, as I watch them, I often notice jagged horizontal lines that I have come to associate with an interlaced picture. Particularly around people's mouths as they are talking.
Has anyone else encountered this? I guess I expected a better job of upconverting. I never notice this when watching HDTV broadcasts with a 1080i picture. Or could I possibly have a setting wrong somewhere? |

That's an interesting question. I still have a standard-definition TV but sometimes, when I watch DVDs, I get a slight effect to that degree. When I watch on my computer, though, it is a different story. I would assume likely when a Blu-ray version does eventually appear, that it shouldn't be an issue. Then again, that's just my two cents.

It may depend on what kind of TV you're using. If your TV is native 720p that accepts a 1080i signal, this may have to do with the video processor in your TV having problems handling the interlaced signal. (It happens on occasion with my TV.) It's not de-interlacing it correctly.
I know this is usually a TV issue - as opposed to a player issue - due to the fact that I've had the same sort of thing happen on by 32" LCD flat panel when watching either my PS3, my HD DVD player, or my old upconverting DVD player. (Like I said, it only happens on occasion, but it does happen.) |

Sounds like your BD player is having a bit of trouble with de-interlacing. Weird shaped objects can be pretty difficult to de-interlace and only the best of the best can de-interlace just about anything without many problems, even still, no solution is perfect. Even the PS3, powered by Nvidia which is regarded as pretty damn awesome at dvd enhancement, still exhibits occasional difficulty de-interlacing some things. Don't worry about it too much. NTSC was a pretty crappy video solution.
