Ok, I'm doing some research on this, and it is very confusing.
In fact, to illustrate how confusing it is, look at this site and then realize that each of these are seperate departments around the world. http://imdb.com/find?s=co&q=national+geographic&x=0&y=0 Some of these are related, but most of them handle their own things. National Geographic is split up in different departments that handle different things. I am in the print media and digital images, so I don't see the film and TV things much (occasionally I have to edit pictures for the channel). However after looking at all the departments, apparently there are several that handle film. The National Geographic Channel is partially owned by FOX, who takes care of channel related business, but the distribution to video is not through FOX. They are handled by National Geographic TV, (which may be under a different name). There are several titles that National Geographic has distributed, and several that have been distributed by different companies, depending on the department that produced the show/film. It is hard to say if this is all going Blu-ray exclusive, or if only one of these departments is. I will try to do a little more research into this, but it is hard to find where to look with so many different people and departments involved. So be wary with this news, it might not cover the titles you want. |

What National Geographic needs to do is put recent expeditions of the Titanic on Blu-ray. That would be sweet!

UPDATE: (12:25pm ET, January 30, 2008) Please note that this move to Blu-ray exclusivity covers films released under the "National Geographic Presents" shingle only. Films co-produced by National Geographic but distributed by other companies will (such as Paramount's 'Artic Tale') will be unaffected. |
