Blah blah blah. CDs were supposed to die 10 years ago. They will still be here in another 10 years.

Steedeel, I'm not glad it's just a fact, Cinema is a thing of the Past just like the Drive-In Movies no longer exits. Everyone wants their own Home Theater, and I think with Streaming Movies. I find myself going less and less to Redbox, and more to buying Digital Copies.

It's not an idea, that defies belief, that movie theatres may cease to exist in the next 30-50 years.
Studios are already putting new movies out in online stores. I rented 'I am Wrath' for $9.99 yesterday. I'm not quite sure if or not, it got any theatrical release in the U.S. But, some movies have been available (the less popular ones), right away on my iTunes to rent, whilst they are getting a limited theatrical release. I would much prefer to do this, as opposed to going out to see it in the theatre. This could well be the future. Studios would probably be able to save themselves tons of $$ this way. |

When I get my own place, im leaning towards a Home Theater as opposed to going to Cinemas to watch movies. I hardly have the time (or friends
![]() I'd rather invest time and money into a decent enough set up to watch movies, plus when ive paid the same-ish price of a Cinema ticket for a digital OR physical bluray I can watch it when I want (pause/rewind) and more than once in the comfort of my own home. But we're still back to Bluray vs Digital, I still think Digital is more convenient, but when im watching on a 50+ inch screen, I'll probably see the visual flaws of digital :/ |

The only reason I brought up Cinema is like you pointed out, no one goes to them anymore. So now that everyone is building their own Home Theaters, they will want their Movies Now.....Hence Streaming First Run Movies! Your Collection is nice, but you better be ready to enjoy Streaming at it's Finest! |

You moan about people spoiling the thread by defending Blu-Ray then you make (in my opinion) troll statements to antagonise people? This is Blu-Ray forum. We are here for the long haul. Until the day when we are squinting at smartphones and watches I will continue to collect and be bloody proud of the fact. I love films and no amount of lazy convenience will change that. You can have your studio controlled copies, I will take my collection any day! 'Cinema is a thing of the past' let's revisit this in ten years. I will remind you what a (in my opinion) stupid statement that was. Last edited by Steedeel; 05-01-2016 at 10:12 AM. |

I mentioned a few months back that the Dreamworks CEO said he could see a time when movies have 3 weeks at the cinema and then a release on all formats at the same time after that three week period. The problem with that is he predicted cost would be related to screen size. For example, cinema £10, tv £5, mobile £1.50. Now, if this was put in place my prediction would instantly become true. People would just buy the cheapest possible version on mobile rather than pay extra for a bigger screen size. That would only accelerate the move to all films on mobile devices. It's a really shitty prospect.
Before anyone says 'just cast it to the big screen' there will be safeguards in place to prevent that. That is the real future guys. IMO, silly experiments that only push more people to smaller screens. This would happen within a ten year timespan apparently. |

I think there is a threat of movie theaters becoming obsolete, but as Steedeel pointed out with the Star Wars Box Office reference, people are still going out to the cinema these days. It didn't topple Avatar's numbers, but it was still impressive to see so many people still compelled enough to leave their home cinema in order to see the movie ASAP.
But it makes you wonder, if people were given a choice between getting the movie immediately through digital or waiting additional months for physical, most people would probably want it early and go digital, depending on the movie. Studios already do this with some indie films. For example, The Invitation was made available on digital the same day as it came out in theaters for only $9.99 to own. Now, it's not going to be a huge seller because it's not a big movie or one with any hype, but if it was Star Wars, I think it would be the highest selling digital release ever (and would likely outsell the eventual physical copies). If all movies were released this way, the moviegoing landscape would very much shift to the home in a short period of time. I may have become very pro digital recently, but I haven't forgotten about the quality of physical copies (I'm adopting 4K Blu-rays and still buying Blu-rays along with digital copies). Digital offers some advantages over physical, but in the pure quality department, nothing beats Blu-ray (and UHD Blu-ray) at home. We can debate all day about which will stand the test of time or which is better overall, but there really is no debating which is higher quality. From a video/audio standpoint, it may not always be apparent to everyone how different they are, but they are not equal. Someday they might be, assuming that internet speeds increase to mind blowing levels, but that's the future. For now, that isn't a reality. The reality today is that both formats are co-existing rather peacefully. The studios may like the idea of going all-digital, but they obviously realize they'd lose many collectors/technophiles as their customers, and they don't want to lose customers. So they are both here to stay today and for the foreseeable future. I very much enjoy digital, but I have to admit that I still appreciate having certain movies in their highest possible quality too, so I may not ever go all-digital, unless the industry goes that direction. I'm just glad my collection is a mixture of physical and digital, so I'm covered either way. |

"Some indie films"? No, it's actually happening with virtually anything new. In other words, blockbuster movies that are made by major studios. They do this to encourage people to buy these movies in digital format. |

It isn't. You are getting mixed up with Digital HD which is released several weeks before Blu-Ray. Dont get excited. We are talking about no cinema release.
