As for commentary, I just read that DePalma doesn't do commentaries, so I guess that settles that. Looks like the only extras are an hour of making of stuff that was created for the blu ray release in 2017(ish). And to their credit, iTunes does list "over an hour of itunes extras" but again, it'd be nice if they actually listed what those extras actually ARE. Oh well.
The details on the information page like "over an hour of extras" are provided by the distributors not iTunes.

Do you mean you can preview the iTunes Extras in your iPhone?

Not on the phone, no. But in the actual iTunes program for PC and Mac, there's a little clickable box next to the extras and that brings up a preview of the menus. Unfortunately you can't click into them further and typically the entire name of the extra is cut off. So something like 'storyboards with director commentary' is reads 'storyboards wit'.

Same on ATV too.

I was hoping my iPod just wasn’t advanced enough. It would be handy if iOS could show the preview.

Would anyone be able to tell me if Apocalypse Now Final Cut - which includes the theatrical and Redux cut as iTunes Extras - has the FFC audio commentary on the Redux version?
Or on any of the iTunes versions for that matter.

I've looked at the iTunes Extras example on iTunes and you can't go to the Redux version to check

You should have said you were talking about the US store because I saw your were in Wales and thought "Ireland and the UK three versions of it in one".

They don't

EDIT: Were you trying look at the extras preview an iOS devices?

I checked the US store on my Mac. There are no commentaries on it at all.

Sorry! I should have been more specific. I'm UK but I use a US (and UK) account.
I appreciate the reply and confirmation - upsetting as it it

You try emailing Lionsgate and Zeotrope and ask why there are no commentaries.

I sent a message to Zeotrope asking if the any plans to add the Original and Redux version to it.

It's a bit baffling as just about every other special feature is there... so why not the commentaries?

That said, I often wonder if with streaming, the commentary is not just an additional sound option, but an actual separate video file?
Maybe the provider is not willing to incur the costs of this additional server space / streaming bandwidth?

Just a though.

I have wondered the myself and I'm sure I asked about it here but I don't remember getting a responses.

It does seem to be a separate video file for commentaries. I would have thought a audion audio track was easier and less expensive to add.

Commentaries have become the selling point for me on digital copies. You'd think the 'film buff' friendly directors would be more vocal about making DVD/BD extras available in digital copies.

I thought (imagined?) that in the Alternate Versions part of the extras in the Final Cut edition in the US store I saw mention of commentaries but when you click now it says the alternate versions aren't available but I cant swear now to definitely having seem commentaries. Has anyone bought it?

For those who have the old version of The Two Towers Extended Edition in the UK (the one currently available in the UK store is a reissue that now matches the US version), the extras were not updated. This means you will need to rebuy to get all of the extras.

As Fellowship and Return were not replaced and already match the US versions, these will update whenever the extras are updated.

You may want to think about rebuying Two Towers, if not for this, then for the fact that when these films eventually go 4K, you just know the old Two Towers won’t get the update (à la Shining/Batman films etc.)

For those interested and with access to iTunes Canada, I noticed that Malick's The Thin Red Line is going very cheap there at the moment with a number of extras. I think it was about CA$5.00. Not much more, in any case.

I paid €2.99 (I think) for each of the Rings knowing that it would be years before I sat down to watch them so I don’t mind buying again this time.

Do you if the Extended Hobbits in Ireland and the UK also currently match the US versions? Are they future proofed lead Fellowship and Return of the King?

All six Middle Earth movies are bundled for €25 this week. The Extended Hobbits never drop that low individually over here.

I’ve asked about that here before but I can’t remember what people thought was the reason.

EDIT: how far gone am I that I’ve responded to that post twice.

It appears Desolation of Smaug and Battle of Five Armies match the US but Unexpected Journey does not. For some reason Unexpected has a unique UK version.

Just tested Two Towers new special features and the menu is now animated (like the Blu-ray is) - cool!

Commentaries are a big point for me too.

It isn’t always up to the director or other people who record commentaries what gets included.

Plus I would imagine that people who record commentaries don’t always do so for free and would want additional payment when they are added to to a release. Distributors might not feel the cost is worth it.
