Thats wrong!
Its not from 4K Masters. This information was wrong.
They used the same masters as everyone else in the world but they remastered them. The US Mill Creek had gamma shift and was too bright and the uk had wrong color space and was too dark.
But its not from new 4K Masters. This was an error.

I'm not disagreeing, but do you have a source?

From what I remember a lot of these shows were finished on film, so they've been relatively easy to release, new 4K masters would require going back to the original elements. I'm not sure how 4K comes into play when I assume these were scanned in 2K a few years back, even if Koch have the raw files they'll still be in 2048 x 1556.

It will be interesting to hear more when we get closer to release.

It seems that the initial information regarding new 4K masters was incorrect and any references to 4K have now been removed from the announcement.

Like I posted above, I think a lot of these shows were scanned in 2K a few years back, so they'd have to go back to the source elements for 4K.

There was rumours that these had been lost during the Universal fire a few years back, but I'm not sure what was backed-up or if the negatives were stored elsewhere. Hopefully studios are now more inclined to archive as much as possible and store it in the cloud and have back-ups.

It would have been interesting to see Miami Vice from a 4K scan, but it would have been a huge expense.

Indeed. One thing to do a 4K scan of a 2hr film. Quite another to do a 4K scan of even one season, 20-odd episodes, of TV ranging from 45mins to an hour per episode.

If you say 23 episodes of 50 minutes, that's a total of 19 hours, more or less. Nearly ten times as long as a single film. But you can't sell any resulting BR for ten times as much as a film BR would cost, so it ends up not making economic sense to rescan when a 2K scan already exists.

It works out about around 45 two-hour features (5510 minutes) at roughly four times the cost (for 4K). So a huge undertaking.

I'd rather see some other shows on BD before they went that far.

I'd be interested to know if the Koch release comes with any exclusive extra making of doc features.

It's not impossible but the cost has to come down first.

Was anybody involved with the Universal blu-ray remastering interviewed for all the 80s series that Fabulous Films have been bringing out? I don't need the DVD Compare interview with the FF guy, I mean someone behind the scans at Universal. I'd be interested to learn more about how they remastered stuff like Quantum Leap and Incredible Hulk, etc.

Pretty trivial tip, but after seeing the German screencaps I felt the Mill Creek set looked a little bleached in comparison. I cranked the saturation on my (well calibrated) TV from 42/100 to 45/100 and the show looked how I remembered it in my head. Massive difference, really made the image pop.

If you're wondering whether you should spend big money on a relatively small upgrade, try just tweaking your TV slightly.

My memory from 1984 watching on my 13 inch tv says these episodes don't look like they did back in 1984. The color on this ELEPHANT set has a more pinkish tint to it. The image is nice but it's the colors don't pop out. Now I am only talking season one.
But episode 4 the episode about the hit man looks amazing!

So is the UK set absolutely not worth buying? Is it really that bad?
Are there any caps of the UK set? There's plenty comparing the US with German or French sets but I can't find any for the UK.

Yes 100 percent skip the UK set. I had it and got rid. Bought the Koch Media set last year, way superior and correct black levels.

I believe only for EU customers as direct sales only.

This is a UK discussion and Koch blacklist their direct sales to UK or US addresses. So not much use for most reading this.

Utter trite. Every thread dedicated to a release has people discussing the pros and cons of each one so they can make an informed decision by making comparisons.

As the UK set is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard and there are ways to import the Koch release (which is currently the best available) it makes perfect sense. There are German forwarding agents who it can be sent to, to enable importation.
