Finished Dear Brother the other day and Konosuba season 1 last night.

Dear Brother - 8.5

Overall, pretty good, but wasn't as spectacular as I had expected. I liked the bullying stuff in the beginning but then it got a little too forced melodramatic for my tastes.

Konosuba - 9

Really funny, with a healthy mix of ecchi-ness. Reminded me a lot of the Grimgar ova/special. That succubus episode and ova are real classics! I wished there was some actual adventuring but it's all good. I'll get to S2 in a couple of days.

But all kinds of stuff was coming out, the trailers for every ADV disc was just this treasure trove of unseen stuff. Would I have tried Excel Saga without seeing the textless opening credits on one of the City Hunter discs? Probably not. So it was one hell of a ride.

And of course when the LD market went bust, I was buying entire boxes of shows and OVAs for 5 bucks. DVDs never quite got that cheap when the all the studios folded in '09, but they were cheap enough to take a chance on the first disc of a series and follow up on ones you liked.

Yeah, the 4 episodes, 4 episodes, 4 episodes, then 3 episodes release pattern for a series (mandated by the Japanese studios) kind of sucked, and really killed some shelf footprint, but it was worth the cost to get some undiscovered gems.

Bohachi is supposed to be a lot of fun. Day 1. What about the Ishii Bohachi movie though? Did someone else have the rights?

Wasn’t even the first time they did it either. Their releases of the Urusei Yatsura and Kimagure Orange Road TV series on LaserDisc were both “crowdfunded” in the mid ‘90s.

For me personally Discotek has been on fire. So many great Anime classics being recused and I've been loving the Nihon Nights line. Really can't wait for Gunbusters and all of their live action stuff. Plus the rest of the Fist of the North Star films coming? Oh yeah.

What I would love to see from them though? I would love to see Discotek release some Yakuza films for their Nihon Nights line or some more crime films, plus the second Golgo 13 film with Sonny Chiba. For anime, I hope they can rescue Golgo 13: Queen Bee from the abyss and would love to see the Puss n Boots film.

What’s funny is that they actually did put out Toei’s Puss in Boots, all the way back in 2006 as their 3rd anime release. Obviously, things have changed quite a bit in the last 17 years. While I don’t have the disc on-hand to check the credits (if it even has them), I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Discotek himself is the only person left still working at/with Discotek, so a new release with a new transfer, done by a new set of people would be nice, especially if they could somehow wrangle the rights to the 2 sequels that never made it past VHS in The States.

Discotek untangling Queen Bee would be amazing, because it would likely also mean untangling the rest of the Urban Vision catalog (sans The Cockpit) stuck in licensing limbo. I want DNA Sights 999.9 on disc, darn it!

Maybe. My budget won't like it, but the love put in brightens my day.

I personally think the first Puss 'n Boots has a decent chance from Discotek, or at least I hope so. It got the Blu-ray treament in Japan in 2020, and Discotek has a nice working relationship with Toei, so I think it could happen. I'm not sure if the second and third films have HD scans yet, but I would imagine so and would love those. I know Puss 'n Boots has gotten a lot more popular for a variety of reasons, but he is the face of Toei Animation, so this one needs a US release.

Yeah, the Urban Vision titles would be amazing, but it's been said before it's a complicated situation. Maybe one day.

The Cockpit and DNA Sights 999.9 are my last two VHS anime. It would be nice to finally retire them.

If all Discotek announced at Otakon is SD BD of a ton of Super Robot shows, Mazinger Z BD, Lupin specials, and Tokusatsu I’d be a very happy fan. I know there will be more but that’s the ones I want the most.

So, I guess Sonic X is shipping? I got charged for Urusei Yatsura but not Sonic X. Will I have to wait for Gunbustwr to ship to get it? Is there anything I can do to just have RS ship it out? Makes no sense to not have it ship with UY.
