Default "I want to lose weight!"

So who here is dieting, working out, undergoing a change of lifestyle, etc.?!

Who here is thinking about it?

Got stories to share? Share here.

Been hitting the gym for little over a month now (5 days a week) since I quit 6 months ago. Dropped 5 lbs. so far. My routine is usually 30 minutes of cardio followed by light resistance training and some basketball.. but it varies a lot as I usually change it up to keep me entertained. Eating right is the thing that gets me, I've cheated every weekend so far. Do'h!

I'm 6' and 245 lbs. Trying to get to 200-220 before Summer.

My wife wants to do Weight Watchers with me, but it's kind of pricey. Anyone have experience with this? It doesn't look like those usual scams (Atkins, Jenny Craig, etc.).

I say keep doing what you're doing, but perhaps up the cardio routine if you can. Don't overdo it, though. If you're not ready for more cardio, you'll just injure yourself. I do at minimum 45 minutes of cardio per day, and I'm talking about seven days per week -- with the exception of perhaps Christmas Day or something like that.

I play hoops about two or three times per week (classic pics here). I normally play on about six or so softball leagues throughout the course of the year as well, but this year I will play in only a couple so I can let my arm heal. I kind of stressed my biceps tendon (elbow) by overdoing it for the past few years. Last year I really had some arm issues. As such, I have not lifted weights for about six weeks while I am currently in physical therapy for the tendonosis I developed in said elbow. Normally I'm good for about four or five days of lifting, seven days of cardio, and ancillary sports activities in the course of any given week. It gets CRAZY in the summer. Needless to say, I consume a considerably amount of calories.

My diet is generally pretty good, but we all go through peaks and valleys -- even those who say they eat perfectly. My best approach so far in my life (about 12 years' worth of the training style that I mentioned above. I'm 30 now and started when I was 18), is to eat as well as you can during the week, and cut yourself some slack on the weekends. Just be careful about weekends, because if you count Friday night's dinner, Saturday, and Sunday as "weekend" time, then you're talking about three days out of seven in a week. That won't really fly.

I'm about 6'0"/6'1" and go about 175 depending on the season. I'll be as light as about 170 and about as heavy as 178 or so. I don't really drink, but I'll have some alcohol for "events" like the Super Bowl, 4th of July, and perhaps Christmas. Throw in a couple other times of alcohol consumption throughout the year for a random celebration or two and it probably totals once every other month that the substance enters my body. My dad had some serious issues with alcoholism, addiction, and weight control, and I'm doing my best to fight those demons. I've got the alcohol and weight thing licked, but I know my addictive tendencies and need to be careful.

My two cents! Good luck with your battle to drop the pounds! Only a couple months until summer...

I've been walking and instead of soda I drink green tea. For me that's easy though, never been a soda lover.

Also trying not to drink... which is easy enough when you can't get alcohol legally. America *sigh*.

Unfortunately alcohol affects your body's ability to metabolize sugars..... so hard liquor is likely to cause you to put on weight even faster.

I still drink a can of soda a day or so....... which is TERRIBLE... I use to never touch the stuff, and it was strictly iced tea (non-sweetened) but simply cutting back on the beer and liquor has caused me to drop some weight.... Keep in mind that I'm a little guy anyways.... so I'm actually 5'9 130lbs or so...... I know you're thinking "That's nothing" but imagine a guy with little stick-arms, and stick-legs with a beer belly..... I couldn't risk it!!!!

I go for lots of walks with the wife/kid but I don't do any formal exercise ...... golf isn't exercise, it's a preview of purgatory.....

Thanks for your response. I've actually been needing to take it easy on the cardio. 6 months ago, I could run for almost 2 miles straight. I was still overweight, but I was in pretty good shape. Since then I've gained 50-60 lbs. I haven't tried running yet, but I do walk on an incline. I think the basketball is putting a lot of pressure on the ankles, as I can feel discomfort on the ankles and shins when resting... I biked for 8 miles yesterday for 30 minutes, so I think I might stick with the bike with brisk walking until I can move it up. Jogging/running is the best, in my opinion. You sound like you're really dedicated to staying in shape!

Soda is never good. I had a can of Mountain Dew in my hand at all times before I got back on the training routine. It became a natural part of my hand, like a cigarette. Green tea is good, but drinking plain water is the BEST way. What I do is drink as much water as I can at work and during my workout and take some time at home afterwards to drink tea. Careful though, caffeine dehydrates your body!

Haha.. I heard golf without the cart can be good exercise.

Unsweetened tea is the best. My brother is your height and I think he drinks a lot of beer (Army guy) but still manages to stay in shape for PT. Of course.. all in moderation.

No problem, I was skimming over it. Lots of good stories.. but I don't think the OP reported back to the thread with results.

I have, while I was not convince going in, it actualy worked well for me, lost 20 pounds while still eating well with a few little sweet things here and there in about 1 month. I combined this with gym 3 times a week and walking one 40 minutes every morning. I guess it was a combination of just being more active and eating much better. But I've heard other stories of where Weight Watchers just did not work well.

Doctor as confirm that my blood pressure is better then it's been in years along with lots of other things that were becoming dangerous. Weight is the killer for our society, we are just not active enough (I sit at a desk all day working on a computer ) I got another 25 pounds to go to finaly be where I should be for my size and height. I mean at 6 foot 3 I will never have a weight of 150

As do I, although my job is more of an office/warehouse job... so I can atleast get up and handle stuff. I agree that weight is the problem. I believe it's a result of things getting easier to do. Before I got a car, I had to ride a bike to work and I was in awesome shape. I gained most of my weight while my bike sat in the garage gathering dust. At 6'3 wouldn't a weight of around 180 be pretty good for you? More if you want a muscular build.. I'm 6' and the lowest I've been is 185.. and I still had fat on me.

Instead of 3 meals a day shift to 4 smaller meals.. That alone helped me quite a bit.

Also, think of it as a lifestyle change and not a diet. Keep a sustainable routine with the gym (variety helps as well to keep interest) Moderation is key as well as not leaving yourself starving.. Expect gradually loss not huge losses.

I've had a hard time as I used to play basketball quite a bit but have retired due to have 3 ACL replacements. So I don't ever count on being as light as when I was playing ball since I do more weight training and do rock climbing, more muscle than cardio..

Dedicated...or addicted. Your choice! Whatever it is, I do work my butt off to stay fit. My big thing is I want to be there when my kids are at an age where they need a dad to kind of kick their butts at sports just so they remember who's boss! I was better than my fat-arse dad at sports -- all sports, even baseball -- when I was like nine or 10, so I never really had that. When I was 12/13, I had to turn around and hit from the other side of the plate just so I wouldn't embarrass him too much. That's a total role-reversal if I ever did hear one. Plus, I just want to be alive for a long time for my kids and myself. I want to have a long life so I can not only build up an estate for generations to come, but so I can experience as much as I can. My dad didn't make it to 50; he passed away at the age of 47 in January 2006.

That will not be my story. It's amazing what you learn by others' mistakes. His whole life is something of a "what not to do with yourself" handbook, from which I am taking many of its teachings.

The fact that I'm extra motivated to be there for my kids really makes the big picture easier to see. There are days when I really just want to go home after work, but those are pretty rare; exercising every day is simply part of my life, just as eating or breathing is. On those days, though, it's nice to have the iPhone for Blu-ray.com browsing while on the cardio bike.

Well when I was 18, doing Karate, playing on the college hockey team, I was about 210-215, but I had a bit more muscles I guess at that time. I am doing muscles work but I am not doing the excercises to bulked up, I only wish to be in shape this time so maybe I could bring it down. That being said that was at 18. I am seriously not so sure I could bring it down under 200 now, I sure am not planning to stop the gym and the active life now that I started it again but under 200, could be hard. However I don't wish to put the weight back on which is the usual problem with many people. But the weight I have drop as made a difference, its very amazing how much better you start feeling about everything.

Some who's 6'3" would be quite slim at 185. Doable, and sustainable, but you need a certain body type for that setup.

My mother-in-law started Weight Watchers about 2 1/2 years ago. She lost 55 lbs in her first 9 months. The rate weight loss slowed down after that, but she's continuing to lose some inches here and there.

I would resort to Weight Watchers if I just couldn't get motivated. Fortunately, getting a 292 on a Cholesterol test is enough motiviation to get me working on eating right/exercising!

Good luck, James.

Both my parents do weight watchers and use the points system. They both lost alot of weight whenever they followed it strictly. For me, I'm a former college athlete and once I was outta college, got married, quit working out, and had a kid I put on quite a few pounds. I've finally had enough of it and just started my new routine a week ago. Already lost 5 pounds in in just one week. You don't need to resort to weight watchers, jenny craig, etc. to lost weight you just need to excecise some, eat alittle healthier, and eat small portions.
To me the biggest key factor is eating small portions. After a week of it I get full really easy now. I cut sodas out completely as well.

No fast food, if I drink a soda, it'll be diet but that's just once in a while. Lately just started going to gym more regulary instead of a few times a month, now a few times a week. Been drinking lots of water. Overall, when I wasn't trying very hard for the month of Feb I lost about 10lbs. But since I took it more serious, I started the 10th of this month. On the 17th I lost 3 lbs. in one week. Hopefully lost a few more pounds after this week.
