Question PS3 Audio Decoding

HI guys question here. I have a PS3 60GB model and even though it says Dolby TrueHD, DTS Surround, why is it that it cannot decode them? And so why would the PS3 slim do it? I may be in the market for a new Blu-
Ray play with a $300 budget, what would you all suggest or should is my 60GB PS3 just as good as the stand alone players out there? Any help would be great!

There are some variables to consider, and there are critical pieces of information left out of your post that we will need to help you. Also, there is a really good link on this site titled Audio and the PS3. This should answer all your questions.

I can give you some of the highlights to help you troubleshoot. First off, you can only get TrueHD and DTS-HD MA if you send your audio signal via HDMI (you cannot use optical cables with the fat or the slim - it MUST be HDMI). Second, on your 60 gb PS3, set your HDMI audio to PCM (the fat PS3 cannot bitstream, only the slim can). Last, verify that your receiver is capable of receiving the signal through HDMI. The PS3 will actually decode the audio and send it in PCM format to your receiver. Your receiver will display something to the effect of LPCM or Multi-Channel - this is normal. You will see which codec is playing by pressing select on your PS3 controller. It should say TrueHD or DTS-HD MA on screen.

Oh, and make sure you select the HD track on the disc's setup menu (many discs actually auto-start with the lossy track). Also, you may have to get firmware updates for your PS3. Depending on when you last did this, early models of the PS3 did not have the ability to decode DTS-HD MA. This was addressed via firmware update.

Again, check out the sticky https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=40872 and do as it suggests. If you have any other questions, we'll be here to help.

Note: I have a 40 gb PS3 (fat model) and I enjoy all the lossless formats.

Hello, I have a question about PS3 audio, but didn't want to start a new thread. Hope this thread is appropriate.

I just recently bought a PS3 and hooked it all up to my surround sound. I am having a problem with just the sound. When playing, I am only getting music out of the sub. Most of the sound effects (gun shots, announcers during baseball game) come through the center speaker just fine. But, for example, at the main menu of MLB 09 The Show, there is always music playing, and I can only hear it coming through the sub. If I change the audio to only output through the TV, I can hear the music clear as day. My assumption is that it has something to do with the surround sound, and not the PS3. The model number on the Samsung surround sound is AV-R720.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I am not familiar with your AVR. However, we need some extra info from you in order to help. How do you have your PS3 hooked up to it (optical cable or HDMI)? Is it a "fat" PS3 or a "slim" PS3? Is the sound run directly to you TV from the PS3, or does it run to your AVR and then to the TV? Also, is your sub connected through a RCA line or speaker wire? This info will help to narrow down and troubleshoot your problem(s).

Sure thing.

The PS3 is hooked up via HDMI.
It is a "fat" PS3, 80 gig.
The sound is run through the AVR and then to the TV.
The sub is connected through a RCA line.
Also, if this helps, before I got my own PS3, my brother would bring his over every once in a while. Whenever he did, I never had any issues with sound. He has one of the original 20 gig PS3s. It seems to have started when I got mine.

Thanks again.

Sounds an awful lot like a setting. A couple of suggestions...is the HDMI cable run from the PS3 to the AVR, and then another HDMI cable from the AVR to the TV? If so, check your PS3 settings XMB bar. Make sure the HDMI audio out is set to PCM (NOT bitstream). Also, have you checked the settings on your AVR to make sure that you have all the speakers setup right? Do you have a 5.1 or 7.1 setup? Did you check your game to make sure you have the 5.1 sound active and not 2 channel stereo? Have you tried playing a blu-ray or DVD? Do they sound fine through all your speakers? Let me know - sounds like this is a minor issue of a setting and we should be able to get it fixed for you.

Sorry for all the questions - just trying to get all the info so I can eliminate some possibilities for you

The audio is set to PCM.
I just threw in Casino Royale, and during the opening song there is a problem. The music is very clear in all speakers, but the lyrics sound like an echo. Also, I am not getting sound out of the rear speakers. Just the center, front 2, and sub.
It is a 5.1 setup.

No problem about the questions. I GREATLY appreciate the help. This has been driving me crazy!
