Default PS3 Decoding DTS-HD Master Audio

Now that HD DUD has been thoroughly crushed and defeated, what are the chances that Sony will release a firmware upgrade that will add DTS-HD Master Audio decoding to the PS3?

I would even be willing to pay a nominal fee for a downloadable update from the PSN Store for this update.

One of the insiders said it's coming. We don't know when exactly. Run a search for DTSHDMA and you'll find loads more info.

From what I heard it's not possible at all and never will be. The chipset in the PS3 just isn't capable of decoding it.

close, the PS3 will never be able to BITSTREAM it because of the chipset. a firmware upgrade will allow onboard decoding with output as PCM, same as TrueHD currently is run.

no worries, I had it wrong until Kjack straightened me out and paidgeek confirmed it was possible/coming in the future. We're all here to learn, me included! It's good to have the best insider's on the net!

Well between now and then, get some more Dolby TrueHD BDs and keep yourself occupied.

I for one would like SCE to offer people the ability to send their PS3s so that the HDMI chip can be exchanged for bitstreaming capability.

I'd be interested in this also....I can't speak to the actual feasibility, but IF, it were possible, hazard a guess as to what it would cost? A couple hundred bucks plus shipping? It might be cheaper to push for integration on the next version of the PS3 and upgrade to a new PS3 (moving the current one to another room). Might be a more likely scenerio.

Hell yeah. That's really the only reason I want a standalone.

Did kjack actually say the chipset in the PS3 could never support bitstreaming of DTS HD MA/Dolby TrueHD? I was under the impression this was just an AVM$ rumor that the chipset couldn't do it (since a nearly identical chipset can, according to what I've read).

Pioneer had (has?) an upgrade program for one of their recorders in Japan. It cost almost as much as a new PS3 though...

Sorry, maybe this is a newb question, but if it were output as PCM, what kind of receiver would be required to play that? Would anything with an HDMI audio in work, or would it still have to be able to decode DTSHD-MA in order to play an already decoded version?

It takes a receiver with the latest HDMI 1.3a connections and built in decoders for DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD to be sent in packeted bitstream and decoded in the receiver.

For LPCM 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 you also need a HDMI-equipped receiver. Standard Toslink optical and coaxial connections do not have enough bandwidth to send that much digital data. If the Blu-ray player has multichannel analog audio outputs and the receiver has matching multichannel analog audio inputs you could send the signal that way too. But HDMI is a more simple solution.

I have an older audio video receiver with standard DD and DTS decoding. For now, I'm just getting by listening to the lossy "core" audio from DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD tracks. But they still run at bit rates higher than what you normally get on DVD, so it's still a decent step upward.
