Default PS3 / Sony STRDE698 audio decoding question

I'm not entirely sure how the decoding process works but is my audio receiver limited to a certain bit rate or can it handle whatever the PS3 sends it? I use an optical cable for surround sound.

I am aware for surround sound an optical cable carry bit rates up to 1536kB/s, I often watch BDs encoded in DTS, I see the 1.5MB/s in the on screen display but I have no way of verifying if the audio receiver is actually putting that out?

I contacted a sony rep and they could not answer my question... but they are going to try. I also read the manual front to back and could find anything.

Thanks,

figures.

...to answer your question your receiver will handle up to 1.5Mbps (dts) over the optical cable.

It is also capable of 96kHz/24 bit.

The rep could have easily read the product description to find this info.

anyways, make sure in the PS3 settings you have a check mark next to Dolby 5.1 and Dts 5.1 and set the output to Bitstream.

You will not get the Lossless audio, but select them on the movie menu anyways and you will get the core audio which will still sound great.

Your receiver does have 5.1 analog inputs if you ever decide to buy a standalone bluray player that can decode lossless and send them out over analog. But honestly, Id just stick to optical for now and upgrade to an HDMI receiver down the line.

I wonder if Sony will ever make an accessory for that, HDMI on one end, RCAs on the other end... is it even possible?

One other question; Is an AC3 or DTS file a specially encoded/compressed set of .wav files?
