I had a large N64 collection and regret selling a bunch of those games.

So you spotted that... The N64 is actually one of my most neglected systems. I got that Pikachu N64 in 2008 with no games, months later I got Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Almost 15 years later, those are STILL my only two games for the system (aside from a few N64 Virtual Console games on Wii and Wii U), and it's been rarely used as I was buying other stuff instead of N64 games. I've been meaning for years to get some more now that I have more of an income than I did when I was 14. Too bad the retro gaming market over the past few years has been completely ruined by resellers and so much is now super inflated.

I'd actually been meaning to ask about but since it's being discussed here, let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly.

The UK version of the Violent Evergarden series has improved subs over the Funimation release. The recently released film has subtitle issues on both versions.

What about the Auto Memory Doll film? Which version of it is preferable?

As Prof said, it's the same disc, but Funimation did their own subtitles for the film so it's a w regardless.

I'm going a bit off-topic here but it is about collecting and is currently being discussed so I hope this is okay to continue.

On the other hand I will add that you never know what you will not miss until you try selling it. Selling can be pretty liberating and it just takes that first item to think things like, do I really need all this? I sold about 95%+ of my medium size PSP collection in 2020/21 and haven't rebought a single game or had the desire too.

Having been pretty involved in game collecting and buy/sell/trade for about 19 years now (been playing a lot longer this is when I would consider when I started truly getting into collecting) there were really two major spikes. Of course the covid spike but the first one predates pricecharting's data collection for many games. It was around 2011-12. I think it was due to getting out of the 08/09 recession plus people around my age starting to really get stable income.

I have said from the start I didn't think the peak covid prices were sustainable and this is proving to be true with many prices dipping back down. I was so in on thinking it that I sold of large high end chunks of my collection that have since been bought again for considerably less only a couple years later. People are still buying though, I've been absolutely slinging games lately.

Definitely used to be a bit easier to get deals but resellers have been in the hobby from the start. Some games that are cheaper now used to sell for crazy money before they were reprinted. Stuff you might not guess. I sold a copy of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness on the PS2 for over $100 in 2004. Rhapsody in the PS1 was insanely rare. Sold for hundreds then became worthless after getting reprinted on a large scale. Like anything now though it has climbed back up but nowhere near where it was in the early 2000s.

I understand these quantities were "limited," but they were still promoting the pin 3 days after my order in an email from 5/24.

I just sent them a message and hopefully, they can send me a pin and won't just say "sorry, we ran out." I probably wouldn't have placed the order that day had it not been for the extra incentive of the pin.
I got a response this morning and they said they ran out of pins for my order even though they continued to promote the pin for days afterward.

If anyone doesn't want their pin or has an extra they would be willing to sell, please PM me.

Yeah I saw it and was like oh cool a Pokemon version. And agree, would love to get some of games that I at least had but nope resellers have ruined that.

and yet that is one of the biggest myths among gamers: that "old / retro video games are SOO expensive!" When adjusted for inflation the vast majority of games are in fact, super cheap. In fact most of them have gained no value at all. Just 5-6 years ago I was buying some of the PS1 jrpg titles that was I missing and most of them could be found complete very-good on Ebay for only like $60 to $160, especially if you are patient. That's not very much. Other collectables are much more expensive by comparison. Those expensive SNES jrpgs that cost $80 in 1995 brand new at Electronics Boutique, Babbages, Software ETC would be an adjusted $230 today! Hell, they were selling Neo Geo gold games for $150 then, and systems for $750. Games used to be MUCH more expensive, relatively speaking.

Sure there are lots of expensive games still but most aren't. It's only when people can't buy them new on amazon for 20 bucks anymore that they shoot way up. Most of the money is in the brand new hotness CEs. OOS Special editions. Similar to the Violet Evergarden CE situation. But 98% of stuff is not that. If you want stuff, order it. Just like we do with anime. Most of the price gouging is FOMO driven. It's the strangest thing about human behavior: people suddenly want stuff reeeally badly only when they can't have it.

You guys gotta realize....something from 25 to 30 years ago that costs $180 today is only like $60 in Nintendo 64 back-then money. In fact, it hasn't even gone up at all and most of even the collectable titles have depreciated in adjusted value. That is not expensive. What you're actually inferring is that the cost of gaming used to be 2-3X.

First of all PS1 still rules, great choice. Patience is a key. Most of this stuff is always available for sale. If you are budget conscious play the auction game and pounce on good bins when they pop up. The less you care about stuff being pristine or 110% complete the better. Example: a friend of mine just bought a copy of a game for $300 under regular market value for fully complete as it was missing a sticker and the reg card.

Some people will poke at the inflation comment but it is relevant. Gaming was more expensive then. My family was poor and could not afford it until the N64. Even then it required saving and help from extended family. It's kind of amazing how static the pricing became and how much pushback there has been to some games going to the $70 price point now. Which, by the way you can almost pick any old console and the average cost per game will be well under that.

Agree with the stuff being said here in general. This stuff is collectible so of course it's going to have some value. People on here are buying figures I would never even consider due to cost. It's all about priorities and what you want. No one is going to have it all.

man you just said half the stuff I had typed up in another follow-up post. But it was twice as wordy, and I'm already taking up enough real estate. Like my god the exact same sentiments. Here I'll just spoiler it and post it anyways :

[Show spoiler]Video game collecting is a slow, deliberate process JUST LIKE anime blu-ray collecting. You put together a list of all the expensive stuff you want. Try to pick off 1-2 titles per month that are important to you. Shop the sales weekly or even daily. Slowly eliminate everything on your wishlist one by one. Like a hitman eliminating his targets. You have to know exactly what you want, and prioritize buying certain things. There's a flow to it all, and you can only buy a handful of expensive orders each year. You're not going to get it all.

Eventually you will get 80-90% of what you want. You watch for things going OOS. You make it a deliberate process to order the items you truly want and need, because each one is $100+. You buy a few things each year and over time your collection builds itself. Most importantly, don't focus on WHAT IS MISSING in your life. Which is a massive problem for people typical to our hobbies; with their OCD tendencies, and the need for instant gratification.

Pokemon, Zelda, Persona, Nintendo, Final Fantasy...yeah you gotta buy that stuff when it is pre-orderable and brand new. Again, it is a slow, deliberate process. One day, you look back, and after you've been doing it for 10 or 20 years then you've built yourself a nice little collection. When you miss stuff then you just miss stuff. I wasn't able to afford any of the SNES / N64 / PS1 jrpgs in my childhood either. But there are also ways to play almost anything today. The Nintendo minis have been amazing. After years of people crafting their own Raspberry Pies. There are options. Persona 3 is probably getting a remake next year. All of those old Pokemon games will eventually get remakes and digital re-releases too. You just gotta be patient; not focus on what's missing. As you grow older your collection grows with you.

The thing is prices are supposed to go down over time as demand slows down and the amount of supply increases until it goes OOP. Certain things make sense why they eventually go back up in price because supply and demand, but the prices of some stuff are ridiculous. Like why does Pokemon Colosseum for the GameCube sell for nearly $170 CIB? That's way more than when it released brand new in March 2004 for like $40-$50 adjusted for inflation ($40 in March 2004 is almost $65, $50 is almost $81). It sold very well on the system. I got my copy from GameStop for like $20-$30 in late 2008 in CIB condition.
https://www.pricecharting.com/game/g...emon-colosseum

Much of this is now a speculation bubble, eventually it will pop just like say the crypto bubble.
