Amazon screwing up again. Yes, did get this for 9.99 pounds as per my invoice but thought that was another title since just got an email today saying it was reduced to 11.99. Again, checked the invoice. Maybe thought it was Spider Man which was also reduced. 12.49 pounds. |

Based on the reviews I was prepared for flat/weak 3D... But from the animated Disney logo, to the iconic opening scene I was very impressed by the use of the extra dimensionality. To my utter shock this continued throughout the movie! In the pridelands, there is good depth and it is even more accentuated by the buzzing flies at various depths, whose depths were imperceptible in the 2D version. There were other such examples in scenes with fireflies seemingly floating off the screen, a chase scene with hyenas poking their heads into tunnels right at the camera, and another where the camera is looking up the trunk of a tree and it appears to be starting just inside the screen and stretching well into the screen towards the night sky with its many branches projecting at varying depths. These are just a few examples that I recall just off the top of my head out of a multitude of great examples. Of course, I would not categorize this as very strong 3D but certainly at least Medium. I’m sure I will be watching this again soon and when I do I’ll note more examples of 3D being well-utilized. The audio was good—I did turn it a bit higher than I do with non-Disney discs, so this could be another example of Disney’s “atmouse” but I will say that when turned up, the effects were discrete to each channel and separation really improved the experience. One last note regarding 3D....As others have pointed out the equipment, screen size, viewing environment, age of the light source, & calibration, all have a significant effect on 3D. One other item that sometimes gets overlooked is seating position. Sit too close or too far from the screen and the 3D effect could be reduced as the distances between layers may be negatively impacted. Hopefully this is something easy others could experiment with to see if it helps them get the same 3D experience I’m getting. Cheers Disney for supporting 3D! ![]() |

Was able to view the UK 3D Blu-ray Release of Lion King (2019). I was able to catch this theatrically in 3D IMAX and felt the home video version was able to replicate my theatrical experience with the film (albeit on a smaller screen.) The aspect ratio has been unmatted/opened up slightly from 1.90:1 to a full 1.78:1 frame for the 2D, 3D and 4K home video versions. Featuring mostly Mild-to-Medium depth throughout, the 3D Blu-ray of the film features sporadic instances of strong depth and a few occasional mild pop-out effects alongside a handful of shots that felt mild to almost completely flat. The 3D depth falls more on the "naturalistic" side of things likely due to the "VR" style of cinematography used to create the film. If expectations are set properly (don't go in expecting the extreme depth of a more recent Marvel title) it is quite enjoyable and the 3D lends a bit of volume and realism to the viewing experience. Regardless of the depth, the film is clearly a visual stunner and the 3D transfer itself is phenomenal, resolving fine detail with excellent color and completely free of noise, grain or compression issues (appropriate for an all-digital production.)
The 7.1 DTS-HD MA audio track sounded full and robust and featured plenty of side and surround activity and featured active full-bodied LFE throughout. |

Curious which scenes specifically you would describe as “almost completely flat”? Even one example so I may compare on my set-up. |

For me the movie provided decent depth in most scenes. However, some scenes use small aperture / magnifying lens effects that rather reduce depth than increase it.
Since there are not many WOW 3D-effects I understand that some people are underwhelmed. But still, immersion is definitly much better than without 3D IMO. |

I received mine today from Amazon UK. I gotta say, I'm not sure where the complaints of the 3D are coming from. Sure it's not the most aggressive use of 3D, however it looks perfectly natural and adequate.

This was one of the most highly anticipated titles in 3D this year, the expectations were high and it didn’t deliver on that 3D excellence level like other Disney titles did.

Agreed, although there were some very flat scenes which could of been so much better. IMO.

We just watched it. A wonderful production in every way.
The 3D? Though some might be disappointed its lack of a total "wow" factor, agree with others who say it was very natural looking and not flat at all. Actually think the manner in which the 3D was used complimented the gorgeous video perfectly for being stronger might have distracted the viewer from the beauty of this story. And don't forget the great effect of butterflies and birds suddenly appearing outside the screen and flying into the picture. Just a wonderful disc. |
