I'm in! Big part of why I'm still using an AVR from 2006, still a little beast and was waiting on the new HDMI and Atmos to upgrade. Seems I'll be getting it faster than I originally believed.

Same here.

Have a HDMI 1.3 receiver, was planning for a prepro with 1.4 but the only one with the feature set I liked was the Onkyo but it had massive HDMI board failures. Decided to wait for HDMI 2.0 and during the wait this comes up. I can wait. Since my receiver doesn't handle 3D, I end up using a direct connection (thank you dual HDMI Oppo).

This could be dangerous news, or we might be surprised.

An upgrade to Diet Atmos (which is what I will refer the home version of Atmos to for the remaining of this post) would hardly have a significant upgrade to a decent 7.1 system. It just adds 2-4 speakers. Not too far off from DTS Neo:X, which you can get today. And I don't buy into this Atmos-certified speakers or equipment baloney, reminds me of, I don't know, a three-letter brand that ends with a cross and begins with another kind of "cross?"

If Dolby wanted to do Atmos "right," I'd suggest an Atmos pre-amp that a Blu-ray player can bitstream to so it can render the Atmos track, which is bit-for-bit identical to the master used for the cinema. It outputs to an Atmos-enabled amp for with 3 to 5 front speakers, and up to 4 speakers for each wall (left, back, right) and 4 speakers for the ceiling. Basically, the same thing in the theaters, but streamlined, and it would've been designed for high-end home theaters.

Atmos doesn't even have the best of quality control in the cinema. I can assure you as the AMC theater in Tyson's Corner sounds like an excess of steroids, and the Regal plex in Kingstowne Town Center actually sounds incredible. Every Diet Atmos house would still be completely different from one another, each limited to their owner's knowledge and budget. Until I hear a good Diet Atmos setup, then I may consider investing in one. But for now, I am pleased within the confines of my 7.1 setup.

Makes mucho sense to me. Unfortunately it seems that the trend is for new tech to proliferate without maximizing the potential of the current.

This great news for the Audio side of things!

I want to incorporate this in my home theater but after I do a complete teardown of my room so I can run wires, sound isolation etc..Maybe in a few years for me to experience Atmos in my house.

do you think theres going to be noticeable difference between atmos and true hd or dts hd at home? i think speaker layout will play key role than anything right?

Now we just need them to release movies that support it, like the new discs SONY and Panny is working on for 4k media playback!

So far Denon is releasing there receivers with Atmos support but only up to 13.1 surround, not the complete Atmos specification "which is like 64 speakers" but not bad in itself, hopefully next year they'll releases 22.1 surround sound support then I'll bite!

Yes speaker placement is key, especially with the ceiling VOG channels.

Well with new hardware/algorithms calculating the z,y,z space to give the 3D sound effect, I do believe this is the biggest improvement in sound for home theater. I haven't heard a Dolby Atmos equipped theater but my family and friends say it is worth the price of admission to see a movie presented that way.

Oh and Atmos is coming to BD, read here! http://www.avsforum.com/forum/286-la...g-blu-ray.html

The thing is you don't need the full 64/128 channels to get the benefit of Atmos sound in your home theater. Remember these are big auditoriums that need all of those channels, our theaters on the other hand will need way less speakers/channels.

true but why limit it? Some people have the room and it makes things more interesting! Plus we would never again have to go through such a new audio specification for a very long time, maybe 100+ years!

I say f' it, why not have 22.1 channels if that's what 8k will bring anyways? At least make it half the specification of Atmos with up to 34.1 channel support.

Default Dolby Atmos Blu-ray's and decoders coming this fall!

Ladies and gentlemen! Hang on to your butts!

Dolby just announced that Atmos rendering will be unleashed onto Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer, etc. pre-amps and receivers this fall with Atmos encoded Blu-ray's to follow and with more on the way in 2015. A few current receiver and pre-amp models will be getting Atmos firmware updates.

http://www.twice.com/news/blu-raydvd...due-year/45750

No new Blu-ray player will be necessary. I'm assuming Dolby and DTS are piggybacking extension files onto traditional TrueHD and Master Audio bitstreams. Older equipment will just ignore the extra data.

Currently, there are two upper-scale consumer Atmos flavors that can also be down-converted/re-mapped to smaller theater setups:

7.1 + 4 overhead speakers or 9.1 (7.1 with 2 front wide surrounds) + 2 overhead speakers. There are 4 subwoofer outputs. Presumably 2 for the front and 2 for the surrounds via bass management. The LFE channel may be split to all 4.

Details are sketchy about the technical information. Is it truly lossless? What are the bit depth and sampling rates supported? How many total speakers can the metadata instructions control... more than 11.4... how scalable is it? How many objects are supported? Etc. Etc.

DTS cannot be far behind with their own DTS-UHD announcements.

Cool! Now I just need the extra space and spare cash and actual supported titles and a compatible receiver to make it all possible.

No new Blu-ray player will be necessary as long as it can bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio.

You just need a compatible Denon/Marantz, Onkyo, or Pioneer receiver or pre-amp or already own a model scheduled for a firmware update.

That must be a new system I've never heard of from the world of Harry Potter... Dobly Surround.

Datasat (DTS) has already equipped their cinema and home processors with Auro-3D w/ at least 11.1 channel capability.
