Most Alliance covers have both french & english on BOTH sides, either side favoring(by using larger font) one language.

+1; that's how The English Patient is. Will probably get Shakespeare in Love, albeit with a massive grain of salt; IMO a crappy Alliance BD is better than no BD at all, though I'll keep my DVD just in case. (Edit: Where's the "hold my nose" smiley?)

Since TCM: The Beginning is originally 1.85:1, the disc will be likely 1.78:1 (a slight open-up), which is exactly what New Line/Warner will do with their release... whenever that sees the light of day.

I just went ahead a pre orderd Shakespeare in love, wish the shipping was a bit lower but still even with shipping its not to badly priced, i might go ahead and order something else and combine the orders so it helps bring the shipping price a little more in line, like i did with combining my pre orders of scream trilogy and kill bill double feature, ended up saving about 7.89 in shipping cost that way.

Hopefully there will be some reviews up for these titles soon. I'd love to see how I am Sam turns out. I'm really hoping for a good transfer...but that may be too much to ask. Oh well, I'll take mediocre HD over SD anyday.

Well I just pre-ordered Shakespeare in Love. After shipping to the U.S. it came to around $20. Hopefully it will be a decent copy.

Amazon just shipped I am Sam for me this morning. Does anyone know how long US delivery takes if you select the middle-speed shipping option?

My SIL preorder still hasn't shipped yet; they say it won't ship till release date. To spread the shipping costs, I combined it with Tennessee, another movie on BD only in Canada. (Yes, I'm a Mariah Carey fan; this is the movie she made for Lee Daniels before Precious.)

My system handles 1080i > 1080p upconversion well, but my biggest concern with SIL is AR. Alliance sources many of its BDs from HD broadcast transfers cropped to 1.78:1. It wasn't a major issue with The English Patient, whose OAR is 1.85:1; but SIL's is 2.39:1. But then, I'm keeping my DVD either way...

Courtesy of Axel Music:

Shakespeare In Love:

40 Days and 40 Nights:

I Am Sam:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning:

The actual specs may differ from those listed but as of late, Alliance has been good at keeping the misprints to almost nil.

Good to see Shakespeare in Love is apparently OAR. Of course it's 1080i, but that's Alliance for you.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be good, luckily so far all the aliance titles i have decided to buy have been pretty decent transfers.
I know they have a lot that are not so good, but thus far i have been lucky when it comes to the choices in their catalog that i have wanted to buy.
Its pretty crappy when bluray supporters have to resort to ordering importscause the studios have been slow to release their catalog titles.
I would much rather see a Buena Vista or (who ever ends up with the Miramax catalog) release of shakespheare in love but hey I will take what i can get and at the moment Aliance is what i can get and at a half way decent price before the shipping.

The difference between 1.78 and 1.85 is pretty minimal.

In fact, Warner, Weinstein, and Paramount transfer 99% of all their 1.85:1 titles at 1.78:1. Further, unless your TV corrects for overscan you won't even notice the very, very, very thin black bars on the top and bottom of your screen.

It is not a dramatic alteration like 2:1, 2.35:1, 2:40:1, and 2:55:1 to 1.78:1. More often than not the mattes are opened up very slightly so you get a tiny bit more picture information than with a 1.85:1 presentation.

But to each their own, Disney will eventually release this in the US.

When in the US? Don't know.

Extras on the US disc? Oh yeah, the US disc will have extras.

Will Alliance release the US disc in Canada? More than likely.

I'm holding off on buying all of these for a few months. Knowing that it IS an Alliance release, I'm expecting them to be $8 - $10 in a few months.

There's a better chance of Hell freezing over than Disney releasing 40 Days and 40 Nights and Shakespeare In Love on Blu-ray for the foreseeable future. Disney is trying to get rid of the Miramax catalog, but nobody reputable has stepped up to the plate. What were the last catalog Miramax titles they put out? Oh yeah, the Kevin Smith films back in November. I'm not even going to count Gangs of New York as that was a re-release of a title already on Blu-ray.

Also, 40 Days and 40 Nights was a bare bones DVD with the exception of an audio commentary track and the teaser trailer. Even if it makes it to Blu-ray via Disney, it'll be a bare bones affair just like their DVD was. Shakespeare In Love is the only one that has a shot retaining all of its extras.

Also, when is New Line going to release their catalog titles? They've been going at a slow pace, with 2-3 catalog titles every 3-4 months. I'm waiting for these prices to drop before I purchase 40 Days and 40 Nights and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. There's probably little-to-no chance I'd re-buy them either if they ever see a US release.

I can't answer as to the New Line releases (my only iron in the fire here is SIL), but I generally agree with you.

Animation purists have long derided Hanna-Barbera cartoons for their cheap, minimalistic style; but historians now recognize them for keeping animation in business from the end of the studio era until Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Little Mermaid revived interest in the art form in the late '80's. (And if not for animation, 2010 would be a dismal year in Hollywood.) Likewise, BD purists--sometimes even myself--jump on Alliance for dumping 1080i TV transfers to BD with no extras; but if not for them, some catalog titles being ignored by their U.S. studios (i.e., Miramax) might not be on BD at all. So here's a cheer from south of the 49th parallel for Alliance...
