Default The Shining VS The Exorcist (spoiler tags please)

I consider these two movies to be the best horror movies ever,
of course I have many favourites but these two stand out to me.
This thread is about which of the two you prefer,
If any of them is not in your Top 5. it's in the poll.
Let's have a grand battle between the two shall we?

For me The Shining is about an inch better (that made sense ),
TS has THE BEST horror score ever, the music alone could scare me stupid. Also I love how it's big, just BIG in everything, the scale of it all and the isolation makes very uncomfortable to watch.
Fantastic perfomance by all, some of you might argue that Jack played it too much and Shelley Duvall was too hysterical. To me it was a huge plus, the way Jack played the character makes it horrifying because he was so unstable and the fact that Shelley's character was so completely utterly helpless only made it more frightening. I could go on...

Poll coming up.

For convience, copy paste this below me,
just remove the spacing between [ & /

The two best horror films ever made. The Exorcist takes it. The Shining has a great horror "mood" and J. Nicholson is fantastic in it , but nothing matches the Exorcist for pure "bone chilling" fright. EDIT: the poll should allow for multiple selections since I think the Exorcist is better, but both are in my top 5.

The Shining. To me it does a better job of standing the test of time.

I love The Shining more myself. I think Nicholson's acting is worth it for this creepy bit:

I would have to say "The Shining", because Kubrick was able to create an atmosphere of horror in the most unlikely of places - a well lit, comfortable looking hotel. Plus, of course, all of the weird little touches that make Kubrick movies unique.

+1
There's almost no darkness in the movie, forgot to say that.

The Shining is overrated. A terrible film. The Mini-Series a few years ago was eons better.

The Exorcist is good. But I wouldn't put it in my Top 10. But it's pretty good and had some nice scares.

What makes you say The Shining is terrible.

Well, TBH... perhaps terrible is a bit much. Lemme delve a bit deeper.

The film is fine as a horror film. It's got a good story and the scares are there.

I just can't watch it in the context of it being 'The Shining'. It simply rapes the source material far too much.

Because it's not 'The Shining'. It may as well have a completely different title.

Both great movies, but The Exorcist gets the vote from me....when Linda Blair's character did that backwards crabwalk thing down the stairs

So the movie is "terrible" because it's called The Shining?

In the context of the original novel... yes. It's simply not a good adaption of The Shining.

Shinning is great but the Exorcist is the greatest horror film ever made. We already had a poll and the Exorcist won.

Whats funny is the Stephen King hates Kubricks take on his novel.
