Putting them in the black bars, and often "generic-ifying" the font, is another Sony "thing" that annyoys me. |

We're all getting a little spoiled by this excellent format. It's getting harder and harder, after all the rich, warm color timing and excellent management of highlights, to go back and watch standard blu rays with their typically overblown skies and more washed-out looking color palettes. The older blu ray transfers especially just look generally flat and uninspiring, to my eyes now, in many cases. Even a below-average 4k uhd can usually best its blu ray counterpart in SOME various ways, unless something is just flat-out fubar. The better our displays get in future, the more drastically these 4k uhd presentations will likely outshine and grossly outdistance their blu ray counterparts, on our evolving home theater systems.

To me it just looks like it’s a limitation of the source made more obvious by the higher contrast of HDR, the jump in resolution, and higher chroma. If you look closely the same jaggies are there in the standard blu-ray just less obvious due to lower contrast, the lower resolution, and lower chroma of the lower format.
Knowing Sony, the HDR and wider colors (not to mention the jump to 3D audio) will smoke the old blu ray. |

There's nothing wrong with caps-a-holic's screens. I think most people don't think to view the full png image, and instead view the compressed jpgs. Goof's screens don't offer a direct A-B comparison to the old blu-ray disc like caps-a-holic does.

Also, and this goes for standard blu-ray as well, you can’t judge it properly until you see it in motion. No one watches a film pausing it on every single frame. |

For judging resolution/detail caps-a-holics is excellent though. Better than watching it live, since you quickly can switch between two editions of the same movie, so it’s easier to spot the differences.

If you have a decent audio setup, this thing is easily one of the best recent audio tracks to come out. When watching this, I was going to skip through and just check to make sure that I was happy with my purchase... I ended up watching the whole thing, and it put my subwoofers to work.

No it's not. You have to see the entire movie in motion in your own home theater because everybody's TVs are not the same. People have different kinds of 4K TVs, video settings and calibrations (if any). You can't judge the picture quality of movie or anything else for that matter by looking at still photos on the internet.

The Panasonic and Oppo 4k players have a feature that can shift player generated subtitles up or down on the screen.

Got the movie...my two cents:
Looks a lot better IMO. The VFX - which I thought would suffer due to enhanced resolution - look better and better integrated with the live action footage. The pervasive teal wash of the previous blu-ray is gone. The HDR is not overdone. |

I did ask Caps to look at the burned in subs.
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...160508&i=9&l=0 The 4K Blu-ray does have burned in subs on all audio settings. Both USA/European standard Blu-rays don't have this stylized subtitles. |

Sony didn't just lazily toss this on disc and call it a day. They used a BD-100, great audio & video, and put the Target bonus content on the 4K disc itself. Only thing missing is some DV MEL goodness. |
