They either open the matte a bit (if its a soft matte) of do a slight push-in (if its a hard matte).
The purist in me hates it - but it's really just a very slight alteration.
(Certainly not as extreme as Vittorio Storaro changing all his 2.35:1 films (like APOCALYPSE NOW and THE LAST EMPEROR) to 2:1).
False. It’s become exceedingly rare on 4K and even in the case of regular BD, it’s really only been Paramount and Warner Bros. that have consistently pushed 1.78:1 transfers.

Being Paramount, I fully anticipated this as well. Having had an (older) HD transfer of this film from nearly a decade ago (that wasn't half bad back then) made me believe that just like "What's eating Gilbert Grape" (recent Blu Ray) and "Explorers" (Shout Factory) we shouldn't expect anything more from Paramount direct. I'm practically reading the low price $17.99 point and wonderful steelbook as a form of compensation for the lack of restoration or need to update said older HD transfer.

Not talking about 4K. Pop in any blu ray from the last 5 years labeled 1.85.
I bet you are NOT going to see a slight letterbox.

You literally wrote “The majority of films shot 1.85 are released as 1.78 on blu ray and 4K in the last 10 years.”

And again, your BD library must consist primarily of Paramount and WB releases if you’re routinely not seeing true 1.85:1 presentations.

Good find re. the aspect ratio and Filmmaker is right and I'm afraid this might very well indicate dated transfer (i.e. Paramount pulling a Bagger Vance instead of say a Mousehunt or Tuxedo). Will be keeping my French pre-order for now, but might cancel. The steel is still nice, but if it holds only a BD with a dated transfer and I might just stick with the DVD.

I've waited too long for this to come on bluray to worry about a future 4K release.

I'll just double dip because the movie is worth it.

Regardless, Paramount finally releasing this on bluray is nothing short of a miracle.

In fact Paramount going full on with Catalog releases recently is also a miracle.

If the transfer is not "half bad" I'm fine with that.

Here are some other movies I'd love to buy on bluray with a not "half bad" transfer:

Goodbye Charlie
One on One
Strawberry Blonde
Dear Brigitte

I'm not gonna b!tch Paramount out for not putting millions of dollars into a restoration and then after they look at the P&L numbers say "it's not worth it." I'd rather it come out and the P&L says if we use our existing HD transfer we can make a small profit on the bluray release of Young Sherlock Holmes.

Agreed. I just wish that Paramount hadn't let this film gather dust in the vault for so long! I feel fortunate to have seen this theatrically when released December 1985! Being it took place in Winter, it had a brisk, Holiday look and feel and would have been nice to see this released in early December (vs January 30th). They are singing Carols during the opening scene as the first victim of the Rami-Tap enters the restaurant! This film has been on Blu Ray for the Spanish market for some time (likely a bootleg)? For $18, I'm in for the US release. Who knows when (or if) Paramount will ever release this to 4K without outside intervention.

[Show spoiler]

Definitely a bootleg. At least it’s got a bonus feature on it, which is more than the official release will be able to boast.

Anyone else pre-order from Best Buy and have it all ready show that it's ready for packaging? Did the release date get bumped up or something?

Mine came in Saturday and I finally watched a little of it last night. The picture quality looks really good actually. I do wish there were some special features but I can live without them because the steelbook itself is really nicely done.
