I re-instated the DNR bug on my player and popped in 300 to see if I could find an obvious shot for you where the DNR stood out and I have to admit with that film and the scenes i saw it was tricky. I noticed you have Skyfall in your Blu-ray collection (great film). Pop that in and go to timecode 59:54 and pause on the following image. Pay attention to the left hand side of Daniel's face. If the DNR bug is in effect then this area will likely look somewhat blurry and will lack detail (It did on my Sony UHP-H1). With your player paused on that image step through the instructions to disable the DNR that I posted earlier and you should notice an increase in clarity, especially that shaded side.

If you've already applied the fix and want to re-instate the bug so you can go do a before and after, then go back to the 'Picture Quality Mode' menu and Custom1 and select the 'Film' preset instead of 'Anime'. Then return to the 'Picture Quality Mode' menu and select 'Direct' and then power off the player and power it back on. DNR will then be back and you can see it in action.

Hope that helps.

It's just that they're not mentioned in the user manual; it's the same with the S6500 manual (for which the fix works) and the manual of the S790 (my current player) which has the anime preset in the menus but which isn't mentioned in the manual. Quality documentation!

The Anime workaround, David M suggested an alternative resolution change method.

So does the S790 need this fix also or not?

Unless I've got it completely wrong (which granted on occasion I do), if you switch the player to output at 2160p on a UHD display it removes the noise reduction. But if you've got a 1080p or 720p display it will kick in.

Right, so it's not a workaround as such if you're using one of these players with a 1080p TV.

Hopefully future firmware updates for these players don't screw with these settings. I highly doubt Sony will deliberately patch this out, but it could be affected by mistake.

I am more paranoid than ever about firmware updates since the ICOS region free mod in my last player stopped working when an update was applied. So I wont even connect my 6500 to the internet, let alone update it.

So I wonder now if the upcoming Sony x700 UHD player will also have this issue, since the x800 does. I guess I better save this workaround in case I need it later. I still need to pick up a UHD player but that will have to wait now until the newer models hit the stores and the reviews start coming in.

Thank you, Samcor_NZ, for finding and posting this fix. I may end up needing it later.

If it's the same as the X800 (and I reckon it will be) then just turn the Video Settings feature to anything other than Auto. BTW this applies to the 1080p output from the X800 as well as the 4K upscaled output, I checked it earlier today.

Not that I'm aware of, although I haven't checked as I was planning on ditching it in favour of a multi-region model.

What does the Direct setting do under Picture Quality Mode on the X800?

On all the other options (Direct, Custom 1, Custom 2, Brighter Room, Theater Room) the grain looks fine but on Auto it bangs in some pretty heavy NR, a typical swarming field of grain suddenly looks very still and subdued.

For actual 4K UHD discs there's no difference between Direct and Auto so it's not applying noise reduction to 2160p material, although I did notice that if you switch to either of the Custom modes (Brighter Room and Theater Room are greyed out in 4K playback) then it desaturates the colour just a fraction.
Do you know why the custom modes have slightly desaturated colors, could it be the Direct and Auto settings don't have the color or hue options set to 0?

Vudu runs faster on the 6700 than it does on the 3700 but Netflix, Crackle, and Youtube seem to take just as long to load the opening screens but once they're loaded, hopping to different sections and running shows is faster than the 3700. I'm not as into streaming as I used to be but I do still have 15 films on Vudu that I plan on watching here and there once I make sure the 6700 is ok. I haven't really had much time to test things since I got it two weeks ago and now I'm past the exchange/refund deadline so I'm suck with it. As for the 3700, I tried three different 3700's last year, two from Best Buy and one from Fartmart, all three, after powering them off, there'd be times when I couldn't change the source mode on my Samsung display unless I hit the source mode button over and over for about 10 seconds, or turned the display off and on again. The 6700, it wouldn't load the Dead when I tossed it in the player, would get to the disclaimer screen then go black. Took turning the power off and on again and then after that it ran fine and I stopped and reloaded it 4-5 times after and it loaded all 4-5 times, even tried ejecting it and re-loading it. But I forgot to try turning the player off and on again to see what would happen, or did I? I got the player two weeks ago and only have gotten to use it for maybe three hours. I did notice one more odd thing, the time on the player. WHen I burned mkv's to a DVD-R on the 3rd of July at around 10pm, the dates on the files showed right on my PC but when I loaded the disc into the 6700, it said the files were created on the 4th of July at 3 in the morning. However, when I copied files to the USB thumb drive then plugged that into the player, the time was right. Kind of odd.. Maybe the Sony players have an internal clock that's hard coded to whatever time zone they're made at or something? All I know is I can't find anyplace in the setup screens to adjust the time.

If anyone knows of where the time/date can be set on the 6700, let me know.

Thanks for the insight. I'd be interested to know if the workaround Samcor_NZ posted in this thread for the DNR problem also works on the 6700. I've still not gotten around to buying one
