Bluray is going nowhere. There are many who can't get a reliable enough Internet connection. There are some who just like discs on their shelves. Me included. Didn't some say that bluray would be dead by 2013? Well, ummmmmmmmmm, it isn't. I say another 8 years at least. Maybe by then streams will resemble bluray rather than looking like a bad dvd most of the time IMO.

Wendell, I read your query in quickly passing through Ruined’s *sister* thread on AVS. Your observation is correct, the annoyance with camera panning (and object motion) is a real problem for 4K when it exceeds a certain threshold and is more a function of frame rate rather than display device (as was proposed to you on AVS). See this for more info… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...er#post7221029 Or if you have problems with the links in ^ that post, just go back here during my CES time and read the linked BBC paper - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ic#post7013442 |

Microsoft publishes the specification for hardware acceleration of HEVC via the DXVA api.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ws_allproducts The document itself will not be of interest to anyone not familiar with the technical workings of DXVA and video codecs in general, but nonetheless it shows that the steps are being taken towards accessible HEVC playback. |

DivX release DivX 10, containing their HEVC encoder and playback software, free to use for consumers.
Download link on their website. Be careful because DivX software is often loaded with difficult-to-remove crapware. Last edited by vargo; 09-06-2013 at 09:12 AM. |

The latest MPC-HC nightlies now feature built in HEVC decoding so it is very easy to test HEVC playback without screwing around with codecs.
Code:
http://nightly.mpc-hc.org/ Check the DivX site for some clips in 720p, 1080p and 4k. Right-click the thumbnails and choose 'save link as' to download them. Code:
http://www.divx.com/en/hevc-showcase Sadly all the clips are bitrate starved but you can find higher bitrate clips elsewhere if you search. |

I tried encoding in HEVC. It works fine for the most part. But the encoding is extremely slow.
But it has to start from somewhere. I don't have a source higher than 1080p Blu-ray AVC source to test the encoder's efficiency though. |

1. If Joe’s home audiences are seeing such a dramatic difference in 4:4:4 vs. 4:2:0 with real world motion picture content then I highly suggest he find a better (state-of-the-art) solution for that conversion processing as something is ‘off’ with his materials and methods.
2. Joe...“I believe it’s only 8 bit”. From last Jan. - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...in#post6987708 Not to mention the fact that HEVC will continue to advance with work started on extensions for 12-bit video and 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 chroma formats with planned completion in 2014. 3. Rather than dismissing in a cavalier fashion Dolby’s efforts (who are the defacto leaders in HDR research and development [at least since ’07 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrightSide_Technologies ]) His HDR expertise might be better served in this role - http://www.cis.rit.edu/files/pdf/jobs/dolby3.pdf Or, perhaps spending less time on talk shows geared to consumers lecturing about HDR and more to other eductional settings, like so - https://talks.stanford.edu/scott-daly-timo-kunkel/ |
