So I'd be alright for not buying this movie if I say I didn't enjoy it, but I'm killing physical media if I don't buy it because I'm not impressed with the PQ, from what I've seen, instead?

What a beautiful steelbook, but what’s inside? A complete turd of a disc. I should have just held on to my iTunes copy because this is just a slightly higher bitrate version of that dreadful master. Soft, flat, bland and full of dirt and blocky encoding.

After decades of this classic being neglected on HD, Paramount finally get around to it, bother to make a nice steelbook, and then serve up this slop. Are they trolling us? Are they trying to hasten the death of physical media?

Again, I’m trying to support a company for doing the right thing and they just spit in your face. Do better.

But everyone knew it was the same old master and still bought it, only to complain tirelessly that its the same old master. Literally no one expected a fresh 4K remaster when there was zero news of one and nothing in the specs to indicate so.

Many people didn't jump to bluray, they went from VHS to DVD and then to streaming.

The record stores are being deluged with DVD trade ins. The store I go to sells DVDs and now even a handful of blurays for a dollar. During their sales they sell them for 25 cents which gives you a clue as to how they pay for them and people still sell them because they get a few bucks and get rid of the clutter.

I walked by a house in my neighborhood a few years ago and saw a huge bag of DVDs just sitting by the side of their house.

The strategy of physical media right now is let's make a few bucks while we can. If the P&L indicates a big seller let's remaster it, if it looks like it will have limited sales then throw it out there on bluray with whatever master we have or license to a boutique label..

That's where we are at.

So you can cross your arms and stomp your feet and not buy that Young Sherlock Holmes with poor crappy video or you can buy it and enjoy it for what it is.

Paramount frankly my dear doesn't give a damn.

West Side Story
Me Before You
Pixar's Up
Disney Moana
The Hunger Games
Expendables
Meet The Fockers

Most of these are not crappy Dollar Tree titles all were in Very Good to Like New condition.

I would have agreed with you, however, when a company like Paramount puts physical media in priority to digital media, and puts a whole line of Paramount Presents out there, that bluray business is not as bad as you make it to be. If there was no money left in it, the company would have leaped to digital only and closed the production facility for blurays and 4Ks, that didn't happen and probably won't ever happen in the foreseeable future.

It all drops down to the customer: if a company did you wrong you voice your opinion until it gets heard. For example: SITS from Disney had a s*Itty bluray release, people complained and Disney put a brand new 4K master on Disney +, The Black Cauldron was another release no one hoped would see the day, yet and after multiple requests from a super fan ,they finally put it out as DMC Exclusive release on bluray. So yeah, our voice count for something, whether you consider bluray a niche market or not (which IMO is not), you still have a voice to complain when a big corporation did your favorite movie wrong, you just have to insist a lot.

My DVD looks okay. My BD looks better. I hope someday to have an even better version from a new scan, but for now I value the greater resolution of 1080p.

I'm sure I'll be flamed for this....But this didn't look nearly as bad as I feared (or had been told) when I watched it tonight. I've definitely seen far worse and overall, I thought it was fine.

Same. Looks better than a lot of crappy early blu-rays like the Scream movies. Definitely not GREAT, but yeah. Definitely more than watchable. That one poster's unhinged.

The reviewer on bluray.com agrees with my opinion and many others do, but some people like to sugar coat it and say it's watchable.

You are leading others to pay for that crap for them to buy a product that you touted being watchable when it's not. The big issue here is why deceive people no need for that, honesty is where my opinion lies, if that makes me unhinged then so be it.

This is a ridiculous take.

Is it an old, low contrast transfer? Yes!

Is it blown away with EE/DNR? No! A little EE, plenty of grain. It looks very natural, even standing 1ft away from my 85" TV.

Is it bad enough to make a post complaining about it? Nope.

Is it the best the film has looked on home video? Yes!

Should you buy it if you are a fan? Of course!

Watching movies is about actually watching the movie, and this is the best way you can watch this movie. Thus, definitely not a waste.
