Good question. I am not sure and have always had mine set to DD.

I would go with PCM.

*nevermind. Considering the source DD may be the better option.

All i know is anytime i use pcm on my older sony reciever the rear speakers barley have any sound coming out of them, along with the center channel. Also on the reciever the rear speakers are not even shown on the display as being active.

When i use dobly digital all of my 5.1 sounds absolutley wonderfull, full of sound and every speaker is shown as active on the display. Not sure if it's just the way i have it setup or if it's to old to do pcm, but pcm imo is horrible! Dolby digital is the only way i can get true 5.1 through my setup. Like i said it could be a setting but i have no need to bother with dd working.

You may be right. It may be that PCM is made for 2 channel TV speakers and DD is for surround through a receiver (on stations/shows that support it).

I do. My receiver allows me to set a preference for each audio type it receivers. If my receiver is getting DD from my DirecTV receiver.... I have it use DD EX because I have 7.1. If it is getting PCM..... that is just a stereo signal.... so I have my receiver use DD PLIIX to matrix out a surround simulation.

How long ago did you get it? I need it!!! I have to put baby gates around mine since it is open and my 2yr old daughter always pulls out random movies, gets them all sticky from whatever is on her hands at the moment, and says "watch a movie?"

I have the Onkyo 605 and set non-DD sources to Neo 6 Cinema (both the DD and DTS logo light up). Does the 606 have that option too? Is it better to use DDPLII rather than NEO to matrix a 2 channel signal?

Yes....... DDPLIIX and Neo 6 are pretty similar in that they both matrix out a simulated surround from a non-surround source. It's probably more a matter of which you personally prefer.

Have you played around much with them? I can't tell a difference, so I go with NEO because it looks cooler.

I actually did a little just last night. I was watching a movie in PLII and the center seemed a little dead. I switched to Neo and it sounded a little better to me. It may even vary from source track to source track?

Man that sucks. My daughter is only 4 mos. so I dont have that to worry about that yet. My dog has chewed up some of my stuff though. I bought it about a year ago, but I have seen it there lately.

That is a great point. My PCM on my DVD player seems to do the same thing on occasion depending on the source.

Sorry for taking a while to reply here but ive been at the hospital all day as my grandfather is very ill. PCM is not the PCM you guys are used to in BD's. DD is made to use with a sound system. PCM is supposed to be if you only have your DTV connected to your TV directly. Although i believe everything just sounds better when set to DD. Remeber only the programming that has the DD icon are the ones that have been mastered in DD. I will ask more people here at work or i will contact our audio dept here at DirecTv to give you guys more info on our audio info
