Dare to go back when director Mike Flanagan continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in “The Shining” with “Doctor Sleep,” a screenplay based on the novel by Stephen King.

The Director’s Cut features nearly 30 minutes of new, alternate and extended scenes, selected by director Mike Flanagan, not seen in theaters. The Director’s Cut will be available on the Blu-ray disc and Digital in the 4K UHD Blu-ray Combo Pack and the Blu-ray editions.

The supernatural thriller “Doctor Sleep” stars Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars: Episodes I, II & III,” “Trainspotting”) as Dan Torrance, Rebecca Ferguson (the “Mission: Impossible” films, “The Greatest Showman”) as Rose the Hat and Kyliegh Curran (“I Can I Will I Did”), in her major feature film debut, as Abra. The main ensemble cast includes Carl Lumbly (TV’s “Alias,” “A Cure for Wellness”), Zahn McClarnon (“Strike One,” TV’s “Into the West”), Emily Alyn Lind (TV’s “Revenge,” “Enter the Void”), Bruce Greenwood (“Star Trek,” “I, Robot”), Jocelin Donahue (“The House of the Devil,” “Insidious: Chapter 2”), Alex Essoe (“Starry Eyes,” “House of Lies”) and Cliff Curtis (“Sunshine,” “The Dark Horse”).

Own it Early on Digital on January 21

4K, Blu-ray and DVD debut on February 4

Trevor Macy and Jon Berg produced the film, with Roy Lee, Scott Lumpkin, Akiva Goldsman and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.

Flanagan’s behind-the-scenes creative team was led by director of photography Michael Fimognari (“The Haunting of Hill House”), production designer Maher Ahmad (“Get Hard”) and costume designer Terry Anderson (“Den of Thieves”). The music score was composed by The Newton Brothers (“The Haunting of Hill House”).

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment presents, an Intrepid Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment Production, a Mike Flanagan Film, “Doctor Sleep.”

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “Doctor Sleep” will feature Dolby Vision HDR, which dramatically expands the color palette and contrast range, and uses dynamic metadata to automatically optimize the picture for every screen, frame by frame. It will also feature HDR10+, a new HDR technology that optimizes brightness levels and contrast for each scene, making bright areas brighter and dark areas darker to deliver a lifelike viewing experience.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “Doctor Sleep” will also feature a Dolby Atmos® soundtrack remixed specifically for the home theater environment to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. To experience Dolby Atmos at home, a Dolby Atmos enabled AV receiver and additional speakers are required, or a Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar; however, Dolby Atmos soundtracks are also fully backward compatible with traditional audio configurations and legacy home entertainment equipment.

“Doctor Sleep” will be available on Movies Anywhere. Using the free Movies Anywhere app and website, consumers can access all their eligible movies by connecting their Movies Anywhere account with their participating digital retailer accounts.

Fans can also own “Doctor Sleep” via purchase from digital retailers beginning January 21.

SYNOPSIS

Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

4K AND BLU-RAY ELEMENTS

“Doctor Sleep” 4K UHD Combo Pack and Blu-ray contain the following special features:

Return to the Overlook
The Making of Doctor Sleep: A New Vision

This was my favorite movie this year and I hate the 4K Best Buy Steelbook Artwork so I've been on the fence about buying it. NOW you say no director's cut on 4K??? Definately hoping the HMV Steelbook is DC or at least one of the other imports. I might have to pass and wait for a future release.... Dissapointing.

Really liked this apart from the silly shootout.
But it really, really didn't need to be any longer.

Me too. Loved it. Does the steel include the DC?

I liked the scene. Thought it was a good way to minimize the characters for the final act while still having some impactful emotional beats for Dan and Abra.

Loved that scene. My only issue with the film is when it becomes a Kubrick amusement park at the end.

That was in the book as well. If they had gone a whole other direction, people would've complained that it deviated from the book too much. And ragged on it for that. What were they supposed to do?

Uh, Flanagan already deviated from the book quite a bit. The ending is already completely different aside from it taking place in the Overlook. The problem I had with it is that it became a chance for him to recreate Kubrick imagery to such a degree that it felt like a theme park.

Still loved the movie, doesn’t mean I have to think it’s perfect.

For some reason I find it simultaneously reassuring and infuriating that the director's cut isn't being denied a physical 4K release due to disinterest from the director himself.

Absolute bullshit that BOTH discs are not getting the DC. Why even bother with a 4K release at all then?

How can they deny us the DC on digital 4K? I mean, really, why?

It does, I'm hoping it'll restore a really important part of the novel (has to do with Dan and Abra) and have more of the novel overall.

This is WB, they did the same thing with The Crimes Of Grindelwald. Considering Doctor Sleep bombed, we're lucky to get a DC at all.

They wouldn't be able to fit both cuts on one disc and since it didn't do great money at the box office they're not going to release multiple discs. This way people get the best of both worlds, you get the main version of the film Warner Bros wants you to see on 4K and you get the Director's Cut on blu ray as an added bonus. You still get both versions of the film.
