Saw two today.
![]() A fun ride, and Rebecca Ferguson was awesome, but maybe not as good as Ghost Protocol which still stands as my favorite in the series. The whole cast was great and Tom and Simon own it, but Renner and Rhames, while very good still, are sadly underused. I really wanted to see more of Brandt in this one and someone please tell me what happened to the amazing Paula Patton. Anyone? Oh, and Alec Baldwin was there and respectable. Class act. 4/5 Now for round two. The controversy on this is going to be epic. ![]() Screw the critics and all the hatred surrounding this, I thoroughly enjoyed myself with this one. And not by ripping it apart. The film is much better than its reputation may suggest, warts and all. And indeed there are some warts, but they aren't damning in any way for me because at the end of the day my expectations were met and I had fun. The characters were great, especially Reed and Ben, and the story was easy to follow and I thought flowed reasonably well, even if the last act is a rather rushed affair. Miles Teller and Jaime Bell own this one. Bell is fantastic, no pun intended, as Ben Grimm. I love that they actually give us a glimpse of Ben's first encounter with Reed and the friendship that was sparked against all odds by two outcasts that then blossomed into a lasting bond where the two would do anything to help each other out. Reed's drive to cure Ben is a truly emotional thread that runs through the second half of the film and keeps it grounded even when things do inevitably go to outlandish places. Some great work by these two. Kate Mara and Michael B. Jordan are also good as Sue and Johnny Storm and if I may be so bold as to say that Jordan's Johnny is actually more likable than Evans'. Evans was fine and all, and is still funny to watch in some parts, but his jerk behavior got a little too out of whack sometimes and Jordan brings a nice leveler to the role that keeps Johnny a likable presence even when he does have his hot flashes. Oh my. Reg Cathey and Tim Blake Nelson are there and Cathey makes for a solid parental figure for our beleaguered foursome and Nelson is so smarmy and slimy that his exit can't come fast enough. Toby Kebbel, while he gives it his all, is the weakest link of the major players as Doom. His final standoff with the Four is rushed and over with very quickly. However, as I said, warts and all there is a great deal more good in this film than bad to me and it is kind of tragic that things have turned out this way for it. I'm sad to hear of all the behind the scenes madness that went on and I can only hope that wherever this franchise may go from here it can be a smoother ride next time for all involved. As for right now, I like this one. A lot. I may have gotten more enjoyment here than from Rogue Nation. ![]() 4.5/5 |

![]() ![]() Another round in the ring with the four fantastics and it is still a fun ride. Not perfect, but still much better than all the hate that's been spewed at it. So much promise is still visible and I have hope that we may yet get to see Trank's original version. Even if we don't I'll still enjoy this one for everything it does get right and the biggest of these things being the relationship between Reed and Ben. I love the design of Ben as Thing and Jaime brings so much emotion to the creation of the character. I just wanna hug the big guy and I believe that was the whole point. Ben is the loyal best friend, but his anguish over the apparent "betrayal" of his best buddy is palpable and, I said this in my review yesterday, it makes their reconciliation that much more powerful and affirming when all the BS that has been put between them is stripped away and the heart is still there. Basically, nothing changed from viewing one to viewing two. Everything I liked the first time I still liked this time and vice versa. 4.5/5 |
