Default Hogwarts Legacy (2023)

Open world Harry Potter game in development for 2021

Quote:

A Harry Potter video game — an “open-world re-creation of Hogwarts and its surrounding areas” — is “on track” for a 2021 release date, according to a Bloomberg report. Early footage of the game leaked in 2018 is authentic, Bloomberg said.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Avalanche Software, the Utah-based studio behind the Disney Infinity series, is developing the Harry Potter game for multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, according to Bloomberg. Players will reportedly “role-play as wizards.” Warner Bros. has not publicly confirmed the game’s development, but will reportedly reveal it after the DC FanDome event in August.

Warner Bros. has not responded to Polygon’s request for comment.

I feel like there's always been a potential for the franchise having an open world game that's MP based but i don't know how it would play out being a single player if it is. Does it just follow all the way through the books?

As long as I could totally avoid taking classes in the school, and just explore the landscape, I'd be interested. Otherwise, like the first movie, I don't want to re-experience school. Even if it's about magic.

I hope they won't mess this up. An idea of the harry potter world being an open world game is such a great idea and it would be so much fun....

Sometimes I stop to appreciate the surreal nature of my story meetings. ďHow should this characterís voice change when they drink Polyjuice?Ē ďHow long do house-elves live?Ē ďAre Graphorns omnivores?Ē These are the types of questions that drive us toward authenticity, and the types of questions you only think to ask when you have steeped yourself in the lore.

Developing Hogwarts Legacy at Avalanche is a team endeavor. Every department understands that immersive storytelling works best when it is woven throughout the DNA of the project. Whatís more, we take seriously the responsibility of contributing new content to the beloved Wizarding World franchise.

The Portkey Games label gave us a unique opportunity to return to Hogwarts during a different era. We are always asking ourselves how we can draw from the rich library of characters, creatures, and themes Ė and imagine how those details would influence the school more than a century before Harry Potterís arrival. Who was the headmaster? What challenges did students face? What influenced their society before Tom Riddle, before Newt Scamander? I like to say that what we are giving fans is something familiar in a way they have never seen.

We embrace what we know and challenge ourselves to expand upon it. Nearly Headless Nick would have been floating around, loyal and cheerful as ever. The Forbidden Forest was still forbidden and home to centaurs not likely keen on human interaction. Goblins were around, but this lot certainly didnít work at Gringotts. The village of Hogsmeade was there, and an Ollivander has been making wands since 382 B.C. Often, the difficult task is choosing which details we arenít going to explore.

This is an exciting time to develop immersive experiences Ė the new opportunities provided by the PS5 are literal game-changers. With innovative high definition graphics, a player can practically feel the terror of Inferi bearing down upon them, sense the ground rumbling beneath them as a herd of angry centaurs surrounds them. Even dueling against a deadly dark witch takes on a new level of realism thanks to the controllerís ability to imbue sound and touch into every moment.

When the first book came out, I became an instant fan. I see each day the multi-generational appeal these stories have earned. I am so proud to be a part of this amazing journey and very grateful that we can finally share the excitement with the world. This is a labor of love, and the real magic comes from the dedication and imagination of a team who wants nothing less than to make this an authentic and compelling Wizarding World game.

Trailer is 4K/60! I wonder if that means the game is the same?

Hopefully you can be a good wizard or bad. If so, thatís two play through a right there. One to be all noble and one to make bellatrix look like a good wizard.

I'm not a big fan of the books or movies, and I was watching this trailer thinking, "Looks like it's only set on the school grounds", and then the game opens it up to the whole landscape and I was suddenly on board. That's what I wanted to see, an entire world to explore, and this game's graphics look impressive.

This and Gollum are on top of my future must have list for fantasy open world type games. And Skyrim too of course.

Some complaints that the visuals aren't even in the trailer.

Specifically where are the poor looking graphics in this trailer? I'm not seeing them.

In terms of animation, that can vary based on the animator responsible for each scene, since this looks mostly like a cinematic trailer hopefully using real time graphics.

For lighting, if it's an overcast day, any outside shot will look flatter naturally because there's less contrast to the lighting.

From an artistic point, this game looks solid. Reminds me of Lord of the Rings with the troll, dragon, etc.
