If I Cancel Prime, Do I Lose Access to Purchased Content?

Yes yes I know, something something semantics about my using the word, "purchased." That's not what I'm asking about, I get it. What I'm asking, is do I lose access to streaming content I've bought (yes I know, license to access, semantics, whatever, not what I'm asking) if I have an Amazon account but not a Prime account?

I think anything purchased would still be in your Amazon Library to view. I think this has been asked before, but not sure. Good Luck

There’s one detail, though. If you’re outside the country (or just if you’re in a country not “officially” supported by the service, not sure), you can’t stream anything you’ve purchased without a Prime membership. Like, your Library tab disappears until you resub or get back home.

Interesting side note. If you get banned by Amazon, you lose access to the movies you paid for without any kind of a refund.

Amazon has terms of service that include "termination" clauses. As a Prime member, this paragraph governs termination of Amazon Prime Video:

Termination. We may terminate your access to the Service, including any subscription available as part of the Service, at our discretion without notice (except as may be required by applicable law). If we do so, we will give you a pro-rated refund of your subscription fee (if any); however, if you violate any of the terms of this Agreement, your rights under this Agreement will automatically terminate without notice, and Amazon may, in its discretion, immediately revoke your access to the Service and to Digital Content without refund of any fees. In such event, you must delete all copies of Digital Content that you have downloaded."

Amazon has banned customers for what it considers to be excessive product returns, too. They have terms of service governing every aspect of their website and there are similar termination clauses in each of them that I have read so far.

Hmmm... never read that. I just stream video and only return damaged goods, so I guess no worries for me. I've never heard of anyone getting banned from Amazon so I was just wondering. I guess just another reason never to go digital. They can't ban me from watching a blu in a player.

When I was in the U.K. back in June I had access to my library and could stream videos (maybe different rules for different countries). VUDU wouldn't let me stream, got an error message when doing so, though I could also see my library and watch stuff I downloaded before going there.

I had the same question. I talked to someone at Amazon about it and they said you never lose access to the movies you purchase even if you drop the Prime membership.

The one thing people don't understand is that even though you purchased it, eventually, those servers will be shut down. There's actually a few lawsuits filed against Apple and Amazon Prime over the whole "buy" buttons on their respective streaming stores.

When you "buy" something, there's an inherant understanding that you own the content you purchased. It's implied that if you "buy" something, whether it's a physical copy or a digital copy, that you own that copy of that item you purchased.

Apple lost its argument to get the lawsuit dismissed and that the lawsuits against both services are moving forward.

Back when I was thinking about buying digital manga from Dark Horse, I asked about this very same issue and one of their customer support representatives responded, saying that even if they lost the license, the manga that I purchased would still be available to me to read, even if they lost or didn't renew the license to the manga I purchased.

However, that's just one service and that I know that content distributors use the arguments that "as long as our servers remain online" or "you're only purchasing a license to access the content that you are 'buying'".

One of the reasons I don't 'buy' digital movies. I'll continue to buy disc until they don't sell them. I've redeemed some digital codes, but I don't count on them to be there forever. I've lost digital music on Amazon that I 'purchased' thinking it would be there. If I buy digital music now, I download it and store it on my HD. We lost Ultraviolet a few years ago. Luckily, I had my account connected to VUDU (?) and I'm able to see those movies (even though they were 'free codes' that came with blu-rays).

I have to say IMO, that concept is both a fallacy and an assumption.
Purchased "content" is a license to use, nothing more. We don't "own" nor do we control any copyright issues involved with. Anyone who's ever read T&C's understands this.

I possess about 50 (maybe more) precious 8-track tapes I bought in the 60's and 70's. Stored in a psychedelic tye-dyed case designed to hold about 100 of these, stored away since the exit of 8-track players. Sure, I "own" these tapes, but NO means able to play them...and TBH they are so old if I tried they'd prolly self-destruct. So one day they'll be in a museum to be gazed and wondered. Every title I've already bought and rebought on a different format....The Beatles White Album I've owned on EVERY audio format possible since the LP's release.

My point is recordings, whether videos or audio, are TEMPORARY. Limited to the playing on a particular device during a particular time. I'm sure there are other stories tied to cassettes, CD's, VHS, SACD's, and in time, we'll hear the SAME stories regarding DVD's Blu-rays and UHD discs.
And who's to say "digital" in its present form is going to be around in another 10, 20, or even 50 years....inherently something better ALWAYS comes along. Technology moves so fast today digital could be passe' by the time I post this message.

I don't have prime and have all my movies anywhere movies and films and shows i bought from amazon so no you don't need prime to keep your paid for films and shows.

The very reason I don't subscribe to Amazon prime. I feel I get my packages just as quickly without being a member. A word of thought, if you can back up your media on drive are disc I suggest you do so. Are if you can get some portable TB drive that works as well.
