What generally determines heat within any device is either build quality or airflow (internal, ambient or both). Since HDDs have zero internal airflow, it all depends on ambient temperature and build quality. Now, that said, there ARE 7200 RPM drives that run cooler than 5400 RPM drives. For example (just an example--not citing actual data here) Seagate may make a 7200 RPM drive that runs cooler than a Samsung 5400 RPM drive. But Samsung's 7200 RPM drive will be warmer than their own 5400 RPM drive 99.9% of the time. Also, Seagate's 5400 RPM drive will run cooler than their 7200 RPM drive 99.9% of the time. But on average, we're talking maybe 7-10 degrees difference, and still well within the optimal operating temperature of the device. Nothing life-changing. The major heat offenders inside most devices are IC's/logic chips, and RAM. |

![]() ![]() I wasn't saying one manufacturer was better than another. I was illustrating a point that if you take 2 hard drives from the same manufacturer--one a 5400 RPM and the other a 7200 RPM--the 5400 will always run cooler than the 7200. The difference is that these temperature ranges vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Please understand, I worked in electronic component manufacturing as a liaison between sales and engineering. When it comes to electronics, I definitely know what I'm talking about. All I'm saying is that whomever told you that 7200s don't get hotter than 5400s... they were mistaken. |

N E 1 know how much room does a game usually take? I want to download 15 games but not sure if 100 gig is more than enough. I am assuming 1 gig per game. Now if i upgrade later on when the ps2/dreamcast games are uploaded on psn, would i loose out on all the downloaded games i bought? Does ANYONE know about this cause i've gone to the website and it says nothing on it on the sony site.
thanks ![]() |

Thanks for someone finally responding about this. BUT, if i were to download abot 15 20 games on that 100 gig hd i have left, say i upgrade in a year or 2 years to a 320 gg or 500 gig, will i have to PAY for the downloaded games again or will psn let me download them again for free on my new hard drive? That is what no one seems to know and there is no info on this at psn

you will need an external HDD that's bigger than the amount of space taken on your PS3 HDD to hold everything for transfer. |

To answer your earlier question, about how much space 15-20 games takes up, it does depend on each game. The sizes are listed on the PSN. But I will tell you this: I have a 400gb HDD in both my PS3's, I have at least 65 downloaded games, plus several games with HDD installs (like Arkham Asylum and Hot Shots Golf) and a bunch of demos, and I still have 286gb left. So for 15-20 games, an 80gb or 120gb HDD should be fine. Or go grab a 320gb for $40. Quote:

You need to fully back-up all data onto an external HDD and reinstall. If you go from a 80GB, to 320GB, to a 500GB that leaves you 2 more usages of your PSN name... which means if you have a problem or two with the PS3 you could potentially lose your DLC... Unless you go back to an older HDD I guess... Point being, back everything up then reinstall on the new HDD. |

The whole "you can only share DLC on up to 5 PS3's" rule doesn't affect the amount of times you can download the content. It just means you can only use it on up to 5 PS3's. (You can re-download the same DLC hundreds of times if you want.) If you swap out your PS3's HDD, it is not considered a "new" PS3, because the activation is tied to your PS3's internal serial #--which resides in on-board memory, not your HDD--and that does not change when you swap HDD's. That said, I agree with you: a regular back-up is always a good idea. ![]() |

I have a 500gb harddrive in my PS3 (80gb) and have never looked back and never had a problem.
There are no limits. It can do anything...it can TAKE anything. It cannot be killed by conventional weapons. [disclaimer] As long as the laser doesn't die 8P |

[QUOTE=Sylin;2395805]No. If you buy a game from PSN, it keeps a Download List of everything you purchase, and you can re-download the games again later for free, even if you delete them or upgrade your hard drive.

I want that $40. dollar one lol. The 500 one is 110 plus tax at best buy. |
