I have been working on my home theater for a while now, I have an integra DTR-20.1 receiver and Paradigm Monitor series fronts and center. Just bought the center yesterday have not even got it set up yet. My Question is do the surrounds need to match when I was picking up my center the guy told me the matching surrounds were 400. If they do not need to match is there a good surround for cheaper.
Also one more question I am using an onkyo sub that came in my original HTIB would it be worth it to go with a different sub and does that need to match anything Thanks in advance |

Ideally, all speakers (except sub) should match. But the rears aren't as critical as the front three (as was mentioned). Probably aren't very many of us that does have all the speakers matching. In the real world, things are seldom ideal. Your system might sound a little better if all the speakers timbre matched (if you could afford it).

I agree with Emoxley. They do not have to, but in the perfect world they would. I would try to stick with the same tweeter material, and make it a smart size. For example, if you have bookshelves for fronts, I wouldn't get Polk Monitor 70's for surounds. I would TRY to stick with the same company and same tweeter material, but again, it's not as important as the front three of the soundstage.

Greetings.
What the others posted was correct. I just wanted to mention, if you like listening to multichannel music- SACD or DVD-A- you will notice quite a big difference if the surrounds don't match. If you only watch movies, and listen to your music in two channel the surrounds aren't as critical. For the record, paradigm does make some quite nice surrounds. Honestly, depending on how good or bad your HTiB speakers are you may just want to use them for surrounds and upgrade the sub first. Could you live with your old HTiB speakers as surrounds for a while? Last edited by Beerserker; 12-08-2009 at 12:19 PM. |

Wow thanks for all the info, I think I will just continue with just the fronts and go ahead and get the Paradigm surrounds when I have the money. Would you go ahead and upgrade the sub, is it going to make a big difference

lemme re... well, its been said already. but i do want to emphasize the cone material should be identical to the front stage, or at least the same kind.
wouldnt want you to end up using horns all of a sudden with your fronts. they can work, but not ideal. |
